Reader Question: Phone Call from a Ghost?

By , About.com Guide   February 16, 2008

Follow me on:

"I received a call today from (000) 012-3456 showing on caller id," writes Beth B. "My phone service picked up the missed call and recorded a soft voice that said, 'Hi.' I can only conclude it's a ghost. I tried calling the number, but it doesn't go through at all. What do you think?"

I receive many e-mails and questions like this from readers. Do I think it's a ghost calling? No, probably not. With all the cellular calls, radio waves, and waves of other frequencies zipping through the air all around us, there are bound to be all kinds of techincal glitches in the phone system, whether you're using a cell phone, cordless phone, or land line phone. I suspect this was a stray call of some kind that happened to ring your phone.

There have been many instances, however, of bizarre phone calls or "phantom phone calls" for which there may not be such a pat explanation. See these articles:

Apparently (000) 012-3456 shows up on caller ID if the caller is using the Skype internet phone service. See this discussion.

Sorry to blow the thunder away on this one.
I use skype sometimes, to make phone calls, and it will come across someone elses caller I.D. (000)012-3456

Sorry.. But I imagine this, not a ghost, is probably the answer

Nothing specific but there is no reason to think spooks would use the telephone to make contact. Other comments correct.

On the ghost issue I will at times watch the ghost hunters on the discover channel. They will go into some dreary room and ask “if you are here please give us a sign.” This assumes thata ghost can see them and hear them. How?
If a ghost could see them then in thier enviornemet the hunters would likely be the ghosts. If they can see then why assume they can hear as well. Possibly the searchers should hold up signs for the “ghosts” asking them to co-operate.

It takes only an itch to justify the results of the search without proof.

Just because you can’t immediately explain something doesn’t automatically mean it’s a ghost.

I think anything IS possible, it depends how open the mind is. I also think Ghosts (People without Bodies) if necessary use any means available to them to contact, to talk to us.

I once called my daughter and could have sworn I talked to her on the phone. I had a whole conversation about a job offer that I saw. She seemed tired and cranky. When I came home though she wasn’t there and I remembered that she had actually been gone all day so it couldn’t have been her.

I get lots of calls from 000-000-0000, but have never answered them assuming the were from a collection agency!! I’ve never seen any other odd number otherwise.

I also had a call in the wee hours of the morning with 000-0000. It just so happens that the place it happened at was haunted let’s just say.

THE only reason I use my phone is for emergeny. So no one ever calls it. I thought it was very scary and since then I never leave it on at night.

The day before Halloween my friend Anna and I walked to the cemetery to see if we could find a Titanic survivors gravestone.

I had a new camera so we were taking photos of a grave with nice flowers on it – immediately after I took a shot my phone starts ringing….it said my friend ‘Anna’ was calling me….but she wasnt calling me, she was standing right next to me.

I handed my phone to her and we were about to answer it to see what would happen but it stopped ringing before we could. She checked the call register on her phone and there was no call made to me………The next day i checked my call register and there was no call listed from her.

Now I just looked at the grave photo I took, right before this mysterious Anna’ started calling me………the gravestone says the guy who is buried there is ‘Father to Anna’

Which makes me wonder what is going on – was this some strange technical glitch or someone who has passed over trying to communicate.

Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of my fathers death. I was there with him when he passed. My phone just rang with number 000 on the display. It stopped ringing before i could answer it. I called it back and no connection. A few weeks earlier I got a call around 1:30am with a Ohio number that wasn’t in my contact list. Ohio is where my Father was born.
