Why Are Ghosts Seen Wearing Clothes? - feature article
Sunday April 27, 2008
A question that ghost researchers often are confronted with concerns the fact that ghosts are most often seen wearing clothes. It is also a question that skeptics raise to support their argument that ghosts are figments of the imagination. But it's a perfectly legitimate question. If ghosts are human spirit energy, why do their manifestations include the manufactured convention of clothing? After all, clothes are not part of our bodies, our spirits or our "souls". Or are they? I posed this age-old question to a number of respected paranormal researchers.

There are many theories that I have come across regarding this. Firstly, if the entity is the spirit of someone who has lived a physical life then it is their thoughts that are actually creating the way they are percieved. Most commonly this would be in the clothes of the period in which they lived. It is the spirit that decides on its appearence, hence why there are many dangers in spirit contact. Taking a spirit on appearence is not enough proof to verify their identity as they can choose how to appear. In astral projection the same thing occurs. The projector can mold their etheric body into whatever shape they like. From a suit of armour to a wolf body. All it takes is the willed imagination. On the flip side the person witnessing the apparition can also distort the appearence of the entity. If a person for example saw the archangel Michael. Some may perceive him as the traditional winged angelic form, others may see a person in armour etc. The individuals perception of the spirit is merely induced by our own thoughts and brains interpreting the energy and then relating that information to learned archetypes. It should be remember that the spirits proper have no actual form. But are merely types of ‘code’ in the underlying fabric of the world in which we inhabit. I read a transcript of a channeling session once, and the channeled spirit was asked how physical people are percieved from the high level spirit point of view. It replied that we are seen as egg shaped clusters of energy and colour.
Hi
I believe that spirit appear to us clothed, because the spirit may be the spirit, but the clothes are residual, from the time and place of there departure.
What, you die and suddenly you are an Enlightened Master? Nope, doubt it. Ghosts - those we suppose have consciousness - are people, too, and as such have the same mores, taboos, and vanities as the rest of us.
Think about it: You are a ghost, and some ghost addicts have a seance to call you from the Beyond. Are you really going to show up in your birthday suit? What if your Mother is there? Get real! Of course you are going to put on some duds, weather they are “real” to you or some thought projection. Last thing you need to hear as you appear before the curious crowd is a snide comment about your knobby knees.
The sweat from a person contains DNA…
and vibrations. The late Dutch psychic
PETER HURKOS had told me,that for a
better reading,he needed not only the
subject’s photo…but a three-day-old
lock of hair (or clothing or other
personal article.) It makes sense.
ha ik leef in holland en ik ken hem nogeneens
mayby because he died a jear before is was born
It occurs to me that what we see as ghostly manifestations may instead be brief time-slips–i.e. the ghost is just going through their usual activities, paying no attention to anybody around them, because they are unaware of the ‘present’ surroundings–hence you get episodes of people seen walking above the ground (where the ground level has fallen over the centuries)or you have cases where the opposite is true.
On the other hand, you have ghosts who seem to be self-aware, and know the effect they are having on their observers.
Hmmmm. Something I’ve never really pondered on before, but of the three (Ibelieve) I’ve seen, all were clothed. These were all outside two in full day light, one at night.
Two were completely unknown to me, one I knew.
One (female) was walking in front of me down a bushy track, full day light. She was wearing clothing appropriate to ‘now’ a light floral summer dress, sandals, and had long, light brown hair flowing down her back.
The other female at night was wearing a raincoat (and co-incidentally it WAS raining at the time)
The male, an elderly gentleman I had known that had died, was dressed exactly as I’d seen him in life, complete with his full, flowing white beard!
I am the Psychic medium for a team out of New Port Richey, Florida. I have done several investigations with them. I have had energies attach themselves to me and on their screens have come up in various colors such as “Flourescent Green”. I have pictures of a particular investigation in Melborne, Florida. That the spirits or entities coming out of a mirror reaching for another one sitting in a booth. The ones in the mirror appeared in the film as “Pure White Light” or “Matter”. While the one sitting in the booth was completely clothed.
there have been many times I have seen ghosts or spirits in clothing. At different times the clothing is the time era in which they lived. I don’t know why some wear clothing, I just know what I have seen.

I am no psychic-medium, but I have witnessed two apparitions in the past three years.
They were both male. And they were dressed.
The first was a teenage boy (of this era) very neatly dressed, so I presumed that was his last ’showing’ at the viewing.
The second man was obviously from the time era of the 50’s.
How did I know that? Well, he was so oddly dressed, that I recognized immediately the pants were baggy, windbreaker, and hat. He also carried an aluminum lunch-pail. Noone else in the car saw him but myself.
(I hope this is’nt starting to be a bad habit!)
You see them dressed as they were in their real life - unless of course they had a tendancy to nudity.
I am no expert - but I saw what I saw!
Maybe a medium should ask sometime when chatting with spirit? I bet they would know and we wouldn’t have to guess any more. Go to the source and check it out. Interesting to know.
This is a relatively simple thing explained by parapsychologists. Ghosts are perceived by the observer via esp, therefore we see them as they “wish”. Ghosts do not manifest on their own accord, they only exist in our perception of that particular event, whether visual, audible, etc.
I saw my husband fully clothed in his favorite chair in the living room 2 months after his death. I was sleeping on the couch, awakened by the alarm and he was looking at me, then disappeared. A short time later I saw an elderly rather heavy set gentleman in the same chair as I came from the kitchen. He was dressed in a heavy black suit from the early 1900’s Have no idea who he was but he also shortly disappeared. Have a lot of paranormal activity in my home but nothing like seeing a ghost.
According to John T. Moore, who died in 1945 and began sending messages to this dimension in 1968…everything in the next frequency we occupy is of thought construction. Therefore apparently we can appear clothed or unclothed, if we wish.
Read John’s numerous informative messages in the new book “Message To Irene’…available by order through all major book stores. He was a REAL PERSON for I verified his existence through his school and military records. Google him…you’ll find his obit on a commemorative web site and he’s on a monument in Texas honoring those KIA and MIA during WW II. He sends us personal spiritual instruction through his writings.
Patricia Pfeffer…Author
This is a very interesting question.
Can we put all this together? Correct, if I’m wrong:
(1) It seems most of the answers deal with the observer. A sort of project of the observer, that is, residual images or memories of the observer are projected into his/her vision? This, of course, implies unconscious and interpretative components.
(2)Shaun Kelly, however, gave a creative understanding in that ghosts have mores, taboos and vanities. This sort of follows Brian D. Parsons comment. We see them as they wish. And, this seems in line with Patricia Pfeffer’s comment, they appear to us as they or we wish.
However, as “we wish” refers to (1), it seems - so a sort of combination of (1)and (2), perhaps?
Ronald Vaughan, who apparently knew Peter Hurkos (Amazing! I want to know more. He’s one my heros), said it deals with the DNA from the sweat of the departed. But, this thought seems incomplete. How does this work?
The most creative answer, it seems, is from Peter Spencer who referred to ghosts as momentary time slips.
Do we have to resort to asking a spirit as Marjorie suggests?
Not just clothes but hair styles too. The wearing of clothes seem to be a conscious effort on the part of the spirit. Probably a specific goal to somehow influence us or make us aware of something. Maybe to recognize them? With a conscious effort there would have to be some kind of intention. Residual is something else then you can understand the clothes. The clothes are usually from their time period. Can they be influencing our minds? It could be. I’ve been strangely drained of energy after investigating some places. I don’t trust my eyes unless someone else witnesses the same thing.
i saw a ghost, never seen this person in real life , never saw a pic of him , he was my friends father who i never met, so how is he a mental creation of mine? according to my friend 2 other people had seen him also, she never has.
he was clothed in a sporty outfit and his jacket had a hoodie, he was dressed completely in RED,
i dont want to experience it again, never did i doutb any one who saw them, but i know for sure i dint create him .
Not only do we see ghost with clothes but also walking on ground. If they have no physical form, only that of astral/energy ones. Prehaps ghost, spirits have the ability to manifest clothing or walking on solid groud through controling or manipuating there own energy. Shapeing their forms through will of the mind. The mind is really all thats left as they are no longer flesh and blood.
