It has long been theorized that some hauntings, called residual hauntings, are like recordings. Somehow, incidents from the past are imprinted on the environment. And somehow those recordings occasionally play back, and we can see and hear them as haunting activity. This seems to be the case with many haunted houses, castles and institutions. Are such phantom recordings just as likely in outdoor locations? It seems so, as those who have experienced such phenomena as ghost trains and the spectral soldiers at battlefields like Gettysburg would testify. This may, in fact, be what Stacy G. experienced in the wild and beautiful New Mexico desert on a camping trip with her children.
This is Stacy's story...

I just posted my commentrs below with the story since I can do it now.
Stacy G.’s Ghost of the Desert was a great story. Interesting and very realistic. I was glued to the story and reread it to make sure I didn’t miss anything. The only thing that was a bit difficult for me to believe was the drive out over open desert to get to the country road in the dark of night after hearing all the voices:
“The spot was very remote and very beautiful. We hadn’t seen any animals or people the last 15 miles of our journey. The last two miles of our trip was overland – kind of tricky, since there were ruts and huge rocks on the ground. During those last few miles, I could only drive 1-2 mph. We had to constantly watch for the errant boulder or swerve to miss yet another arroyo. The terrain was typical desert New Mexico with some short, scattered trees, but mainly rocks and scrub brush. ”
After hearing all sorts of strange voices imagine driving back the two miles overland to get to the desert country road in the pitch darkness of night. (I can imagine it could have been worse if things were banging on her car as she drove to the road. Or perhaps seeing strange things in the headlights.)
I would think it would have been easy to been disorientated and get totally lost at night. I bet it’s easy to get lost even in the day out in the open desert.
I have a friend (in his 40s) who went off a wilderness road to park for a while and listen. He shut off his car lights and was in pitch darkness. He said he heard shrieks and other strange sounds and quickly got into his car and drove away. He feared wild animals and thought attacks were going on. He said many of the sounds were even stranger than he expected. Strange enough to scare him to get out of there in a hurry. Stacy and her kids out in the middle of the desert hearing disembodied voices much been terrifying. Once they got to the road they might have seen an earthy light(marfa light)pacing their car.
I live near a ghost town in Arizona (vulture city)and have also encountered several “incidents” ranging from children laughing/playing outside my bedroom at 3am, a woman screaming “help” at the end of my drive way late at night, noticed cigar aroma as if someone was standing right next to me smoking, the smell of cow dung as pungent as if i had just stepped in a fresh pile… i have witnesses for these incidents and have encountered several more things that i just cannot explain…
I have seen and heard unusual things in the woods on several occasions. The Minnesota Multiphasic test has several questions on seeing and hearing things, so those of us who do run the risk of having a mental health label attached to us if we try to seek answers to these events. Most of the
time we just keep quiet.
I am going to relate the events I have whitnessed or have had related to me by people I can trust.
(1) Tiny blue lights on the ground in the woods that were very pretty like tiny stars. It was dusk and several of us in a group who were sitting on the ground grabbed for them and they would dissolve into the earth.
(2) I was canoeing with my Son very late into the night and we knew the large lake we were crossing had some dangerous currents in the area we had to cross.
I was trying to make up my mind to go into shore and call the spotter who was picking us up at a designated site near the place where the river outlet emptied into lake Michigan.
I prayed to choose the right decision and when I was done I heard a distinct yell like a Indian Warhoop on shore. I decided that something or someone was calling to me to come ashore. We ended up landing at a remote cabin with a family inside. Mother and children, I asked to use the phone to call my spotter. They allowed me. The cabin was open with a large screened in porch. All of a sudden there was a blood curdling war hoop outside and everyone heard it and actually jumped and become fearful.
I did not want the people to turn us out so I said it sounded like a Bobcat to me,but I knew well it was something other than a Bobcat. I have spent most of my life in the woods and I never heard a sound like that before or after.
(3) I know of a place where there are Indian Burials and people were making plans to disturb them for a variety of reasons.
“Progress” they say to upgrade a road bulldoze a two track into a graded road.
People who live in that area hear horses in the tight galloping down the road and yet they cannot see the horses. They hear them coming in the distance and come right by them and then fade into the distance but never see anything.
In the same area a person hears someone running around his cabin he has the automatic lights and the runner sounds like it is running close enough to the house to trip the light switch but it doesn’t. He hears the runner run right by him too and then going off into the distance not missing a step.
There is something going on that we do not know all the answers to.People highly trained in the sciences cannot see or discover what these events are. Sometimes they are hallucinations and perhaps a sign of mental illness and at other times they absolutely are not.
I have been with others who have experienced the same phenomenon at the same time.
