Awkward Tombstones

This photogallery features 22 unusual, awesome, profane, irreverant and even looney tombstones. Some are incredibly elaborate while others are dirt cheap. Perhaps my favorite is #4, in the shape of a piano for Estelle Brazier, who died in 1911. It's unknown whether she was a piano teacher or just loved the instrument. #15 shows one of the many tombstones in the Granary Burying Ground in Boston, Mass. that features a skull and crossbones. The photo shown here with the winged skull is one I took in that same graveyard on a recent trip to Boston.

I love the piano! I wonder if it is a tribute to her passion of music. I also like #11 because it is unique and to me would represent a simpler time when people had to make do with what was available. #7 … I dont know if I should laugh or not…… “sorry son, Santa died, No presents for you this year”

some of the pictures where good but they tried to pass off halloween decorations as actual tombstones was real annoying and felt like they thought very little of thier readers…if you want an odd tombstone then search for Lady Gray in Salt lake city, ut that one is a mystery!

nefhilim –
Richelle Hawks has pretty much solved the mystery of Lilly Gray’s tombstone. See her article at:

The oak tree stone pictured in #5 is a very common type of tombstone in Chicago cemeteries.
