Reader Report: "The ghost looked like me!"

By , About.com GuideJune 11, 2012

Follow me on:

"I live in a small town in Swansea, Wales. One night two years ago, the strangest thing happened," reports Adele. "I was in a deep sleep in the summer and suddenly became freezing. I woke up to see a lady who looked exactly like me sitting beside me on my bed! I rubbed my eyes several times, and every time I opened my eyes, she was still there. She had long black hair and was wearing a long white dress with dirt at the bottom. She smiled at me. Then she stood up, walked out of my room and straight down the stairs! I still don't know who or what she is, but she was definitely real!"

Every paranormal investigator -- even in cases like this that are not possible to investigate directly -- must first consider non-paranormal explanations for an experience. There are many unknowns: Adele's state of mind, personal circumstances, emotional state, etc. Adele's experience could have been:

  • A waking dream or lucid dream
  • A hallucination of some kind

These are the most likely possibilities. Of course, on this site we also like to speculate about paranormal possibilities:

  • A psychic projection of herself (only Adele could offer an explanation as to why)
  • A doppelganger -- a mysterious person or entity that seems to be a duplicate of a living person
  • The ghost of an ancestor whom Adele closely resembles

Let's ask the readers: What do you think of Adele's experience?

Interesting story! I too have had an experience about three months ago and don’t know if I was dreaming or did I really experience “something”?

I remember lying in bed and my eyes are wide open but I feel pinned down. I can’t move my arms not even my head. I don’t see anything but I have this feeling of knowing something just isn’t right. Around me I feel terrified but in another way, mad. I try to let out a sound but nothing comes out but I strongly remember “thinking” ‘In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ leave me alone’ and instantly it was like a vale had lifted. I felt like I could breath again! I sat up in bed freaking out! Never have I had any type of supernatural experience in the past. What happened to me? Was it a first-time waking dream that I hope to never have again?

I’m a Christian woman and have always had an open mind for the paranormal. But what I went through will always stick with me. As I’m sure Adele can say for her experience too.

What you described sounds like sleep paralysis. It’s a frequently-reported phenomena that is associated with hallucinations and/of feeling a presence in the room.

Adele’s dream can be a premonition like a travel in the future or
a vision about a parallel universe.
It seems that we keep going again and again in the graveyard because
some kind of memories and feelings are still and will be stronger and
stronger. It is magical .It is a stargate from the past to the future and
from the future to the present. We all are stars’light .

If she “woke up”, chances are she was actually still dreaming.
Anytime someone starts a paranormal story and it involves them in bed, it’s a dream.

Who knows what to make of this, but I do know a friend of mine met his doppelganger once on the front walk of his house years ago. I have no reason to doubt his account of things, so it could very well have been the same thing.

Or a dream. Sometimes a weird dream is just a weird dream.

Could be a past life.
