"This took place on my farm near the town of Orick, California on May 30, 2007," reports Jeff S. "It was dark out and I was inside my home watching television. I heard some strange noises outside, so I got up and looked out the back window. I saw a large man covered in black fur run past my yard light. I grabbed the shotgun and ran outside. I heard a ruckus in my chicken barn and started walking over there when I saw a big, dark figure come out of the barn. It started to walk away, so I aimed the shotgun and fired.
"When I shot, I heard a loud scream of agonizing pain. It sounded non-human. In the morning, I went to the chicken barn and saw at least a dozen chickens dead, some of their heads torn off. I went to where I shot the dark figure and I saw a blood trail. I followed it for miles before I gave up. The blood trail still continued, but I didn't follow it all the way. I have never seen the figure again."
Thanks for that report, Jeff, but I have a few comments and questions about this story:
- Is it common custom to shoot at trespassers in Orick? Shoot and ask questions later? After all, it could have been a man in a heavy coat.
- Did you report this incident to anyone? Local authorities? Bigfoot research groups?
- Were there any footprints?
- Did you take any photos? Of the chickens? Of the blood trail? Seems like this would have been a great story for the local paper.
- Did you have the presence of mind to collect any samples of that blood? It could have been valuable evidence if the creature was a Sasquatch.
What do you think of Jeff's story, readers? Is he just pulling our leg with this extraordinary claim? Or did Jeff in fact have an extraordinary encounter?

i think he would have reported it r told the news paper was it chickens blood he was following wy should it kill chickens and not take them with him sorry i dont beleive this 1
Shoot and ask questions later !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would have reported this at least to a paranormal group to investagate. And took samples of the blood trail there had to be some kind of evidence in the chicken shed.If this really did happen this guy is very lucky Mr. Bigfoot didnt come after him and stick that gun were the sun dont shine.
1 – Always double tap… if your going to shoot it, kill it.
2 – I could see this as being believable. I would figure whoever/whatever did it coming back to return some pain, but other than that I could see an animal wondering around looking for an easy meal.
This is a questionable story about questionable actions. I doubt that California law allows the shooting of an individual who (by the account given) was walking away from the shooter. Self defense law is specific about this in most states. It the whatever / whoever it was came toward the armed property owner, the property owner might have legitimate grounds for shooting the oncoming figure. Also, in most states, NOT reporting such a shooting incident is a felony violation.
Finally: a genuine photo might be worth much more than a tall tale about an imaginary creature. Choose carrying both gun & camera but consciously choose using the camera instead of gun in the majority of cases.
I had the exact same reaction – why was this guy shooting what he thought was a MAN WALKING AWAY?!?
If this was a Bigfoot – same thing. Whatever it was was doing him no harm. Yes, it killed his chickens which was awful, but what he did was no better.
Maybe he did just make the whole thing up, who knows…but even if he did, this guy sounds dangerous to be around. More dangerous than a Bigfoot.
Sounds all a bit “horror story” like to be true,
Any blood trail, whether it being chicken’s or bigfoot’s cant go on for miles unless it has some form of haemophilia!
There’s a comotion in his chicken barn, he shoots whatever he thought was causing it, then goes back in the morning to check to see what he shot???? Um…………if I shot at something, I would have went into the barn to see what it was. I don’t believe his story at all.
Americans are alltogther too gun crazy and will shoot at anything
The story is questionable at best. Why would the guy shoot and then go back into the house? And besides, the guy mentioned a non-human scream. Well, if I was shot, well, I think that I would sound non-human myself. Either this guy is cold hearted about shooting at anything that moves or he has a really great imagination about making up things. I think that I would at least have taken some blood samples and reported it and reported it sooner than waiting until the next morning.
After having an encounter some 30 yrs ago, I will say that there is something about being in the prescense of these creature that bring out the most inner primal human fear..I have never been that scared again ever in my life and that includes being a combat Vet., being shot at and 2 IED survivals…But this story just don’t add up .AT ALL !
I assume since there is no tape or ention of it , that 911 was never called. I mean I’ve lived in the sticks all my life and while we do handle things a bit different, when you see 25 chickens slaughtered you call 911..immediately. I would have taken several fox or a pack of wild dogs, or wolves to have done that, but then they usually kill one eat it. Bigfoot is a huge creature, being able to catch that many chickens doesn’t sound realistic…We have all heard the stories of the creatures carrying deer, young livestock and even dead cattle…
Ok next, he had better hope it wasn’t a person…That Homocide, no matter how you look at it. In my case there was plenty of light and I was close enough (25 ft) from the creature to see what I was dealing with if you go firing off rounds in the dark who knows what you might hit…a kid, a neighbor.
If this was a suspected Bigfoot encounter, which it must of been or why else would you fire a weapon at it, then why no police report (no FOID?), wouldn’t you need that at the very least to file an insurance claim or as a write of on the loss if audited…Why would you take to the net and not the TV station, you could have remained unknown but if you felt there was threat enough to fire upon it shouldn’t the othe citizens be aware of this…A again, EVIDENCE…I went back with people within the hour of my encounter and collected what I could, where are the chicken photos, the barn photos…..NOPE SORRY…this one don’t pass the smell test.
Yeah this is BS…He shot the BF while it turned his back on him and then he went back inside and woke up the next morning and followed a bloody trail?? how nuts those that sound???
If it had been me, I might of collected some blood samples but I sure would not of called the Police.
Shooting someone for stealing chicken is a crime, because “His” life was not in danger, just the chickens.
The Police would have taken his gun, at the very least, if they did not throw him in jail for attempted murder.
With the blood trail to follow, the police may have caught up with the “Person/Bid Foot” and found him dead, than he would of been charged with murder of a person or an endangered species. If I’m correct, most states have put Big Foot on the endangered list.
Taking pictures of a bunch of dead chickens doesn’t prove anything , except that something got to them and killed them. The most important evidence would have been the Blood.
I think this story is a load of crap. First of all, unless it is common to have hooligans raid your chicken coop (never heard of it referred to as a “chicken barn” before) in Orick, CA… I would think that a farmer would be terrified during this experience.
So he doesn’t ask who’s there, or anything? Just blindly shoots into the dark. On top of that, it seems that he obviously shoots someone/something and then what? Just goes back to bed? What, the what?
And if he thought he shot a person/thing… he gave up following a blood trail after a mile? Even if he thought he shot an animal, he gave up following a blood trail after a mile? If it was just an animal, a responsible hunter/gun owner would make sure that they don’t leave an animal suffering. If it was just a human, a responsible hunter/gun owner would make sure that there isn’t a dying person in need of medical assistance in the wilderness.
Orick, CA is not far from where I grew up (Medford, OR), and that whole area is miles and miles of forest. I am talking hudreds of thousands, possibly millions, of acres of National Forrest and privately owned forested land. So if there was a bigfoot in america, that is where I would look. But this particular story sounds like fabricated b.s. to me.
Good story but that’s what it is a story ! Nothing else.
