I’ve got a little more time on my hands than usual this time of year so I read the latest round of stories. Most weren’t of interest but the ‘Are there really ghosts at Versailles?’ story was really excellent and I hadn’t heard of this until now. Apparently these two women were educated – from wikipedia ‘In 1886 Moberly became the first Principal of a hall of residence for young women, St. Hugh’s College in Oxford. It became apparent that Moberly needed someone to help run the college, and Jourdain was asked to become Moberly’s assistant’. Apparently they wrote a book about their ghosts sightings or time travel experience. I took a look at the details in Wikipeida and they say ‘A review of the book in the Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research suggested that the women had misinterpreted normal events that they had experienced.’ I think the author Tim RIchardson’s explaination was spot on. ” In the end, The Trianon Adventure is perhaps best understood as a romance rather than a ghost story.” “the ladies invented almost everything on the most slender basis, partly arising from their own readings around the subject, as a manifestation of their excitement and delight at having met each other ” But I think the take home message here is that education and a well-bred background doesn’t necessarily make one a good or truthful observer. If you didn’t know all the facts you could have easily fallen for it.
