Story 2: Flesh from the Sky

Most readers of this site and of paranormal literature are familiar with the phenomenon of unusual rains. There have been many documented cases of rains, or "falls," of fish, frogs, toads, periwinkles and other creatures. There have been unexplained falls of stones from the sky and great chunks of ice.

One the most unsual, baffling and ultimately disturbing cases of unexplained rains took place in early March, 1876. Note that this was well before the era of powered flight. Near the home of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Crouch in the area of Olympian Springs, Kentucky, flakes of a mat-like substance fell from the sky covering an area about 100 yards long and 50 yards wide. The sky at the time, according to witnesses, was cloudless, yet down came these flakes of flesh measuring one to three or four inches square.

The substance was said to look like fresh beef, and some men who were brave enough to taste the unknown material said it tasted like mutton or venison, according to a report in Scientific American. Some of the substance was preserved for testing. Some early reports said it was nothing more than a kind of simple vegetable matter, but subsequent more scientific analysis reached a more shocking conclusion.

Microsopic examination by scientists identified the substance as "lung tissue" from either a horse or a human infant! Further samples examined by several independent scientists found that some of the material was lung tissue, some cartilage, and some muscle tissue. Its identity was not in question, but the mystery remained how it happened to fall from the sky.

One theory offered is that it was "disgorged" by over flying buzzards. That's a lot of disgorgement (from buzzards that were never seen) to cover 5,000 square yards.
