Rod by the Car

from Eric Brightfield - My neighbor took some pictures of my 9-year-old son as he sat in the backseat of the car. My wife stopped to say hi to her and she was outside trying out her new Sony camera. She apparently took about four snapshots in quick succession. Her camera lens was within the shadow of the backseat so there was no chance for any ray of sunlight to hit the camera lens. I am usually a skeptic, but as you can see, this "thing" is between the camera and Luke's face. It was not in any of the other pictures taken at the same time, so it could not have been an insect, plus you would have seen Luke's face reacting to a large insect so close to his face in at least one of the four frames if it was indeed a large flying insect. The camera was no less than 20 inches from Luke's face, so there was not much room for some type of optical illusion or lens flare effect to happen. When my neighbor showed her husband the pictures and said, "Here's a cute one of Luke, but there's something wrong with the photo." Her husband took one look and stopped in his tracks, explaining to her what it surely looked like. They came over and got me to see it, and after reading some of the other web info on the phenomenon, it made the hair stand up on my arms. Very strange. I only wish she was using my 8 megapixel Olympus, which is 3-4 times higher resolution than the small Sony camera she was using.
