100 Times
Brighter Than the Moon
by Helene D.
It was one or two in the morning and I was driving back from Monroe, Mich. where my husband and I had gone to pick up a van conversion from the dealership. He was driving the van and I was several miles behind driving the sedan with our two little girls asleep in the back seat. There was no traffic on the road at that hour and I was glad the long drive was just about over. Suddenly, above and slightly to the front of the car appeared a large, brilliant ball. Since it was at such an angle to my view, I had nothing to reference it to in size, but looked about the same as the moon when it comes over the horizon - only 100 times brighter. It maintained this position, around curves and dips and hills in the roadway for about 3-4 miles. Suddenly, it moved a bit further to the front, did a nosedive into the ground and exploded. The next day I was telling my neighbor, an elderly, retired railroad engineer about the strange sight. He gave a chuckle and said he'd seen this many times while working at night. He said it was "ball lightning" and at times would follow the telegraph lines situated along the tracks and then mysteriously sink to the ground and explode just as I had seen.
