Disappearing
Keys
by Tanmaya N.
The DOPler thingy has happened to me only once, but it was enough to give me the heebie-jeebies. I live in New Delhi, India, and I'd just moved into a two-room basement. My stuff was still packed in plastic bags, and only a few bare essentials - some clothes, shaving kit, soap, etc. - were out. I had a floor bed and a bike, and I would always keep the keys on a windowsill next to the door, away from the bed. There was nothing else there - no table, nothing, just a candle and a matchbox (it was summer and there were power cuts daily in that area).
One Saturday night, my girlfriend and I got home and I put my keys on the sill like I'd done for the past few days. The next morning, it happened. The keys were gone - disappeared, gone for a stroll, for all I cared. We hunted high and low, checked all my pockets, the wall closet, and the entire room (which was bare except for that one floor bed, mind you). We didn't find them and I went out, got a locksmith and had a duplicate set of keys made. About three or four days later, I got home and went to put the bunch of new keys on the same sill like always, and the old keys were right there - right next to the candle (which, incidentally, I had lit the day before during a power cut)! I didn't have a maid, no one had visited me except my girlfriend, and there it was, like it had never gone. But my family on my dad's side has a history of sightings, and I've had some experiences myself, so I think I had probably had a "mischievous visitor."
