Blinding
Ball Lightning
by Beverly J.
Back in the summer of 1974, my mother and I were at our camp in Tionesta, Pennsylvania. There was a storm brewing. All of a sudden it became pitch black outside. We were quite scared at the time. She then pulled the circuit breaker as she always did during a storm. Just then we heard this big suction noise. The entryway was not yet opened. All of a sudden this huge ball of lightning was two to three feet in diameter with a translucent center and blue glowing flames on the outer perimeter. It actually impaired our vision for some time. It lasted only maybe five to 10 seconds. It made its way up to a religious picture, The Holy Family, that was on the wall. Extending out from behind the picture was a piece of palm we received from church that year. The palm was burnt on the edges but the ball of lightning must of went out of the fuse box. There was no damage. It left no damage to the outlet or the contents inside the camp. We noticed a sulfur-like smell at the time.
When the lightning struck the second time, this is when we experienced this huge ball. We also noticed blisters on the lower parts of our body. These blisters were small in size. After wondering whether the coast was clear, we headed outside to get some help at a near by store. A man came back to check things out - and good thing he had rubber shoes on at the time, or he would have been electrocuted. The well drillers who put in the pump forgot to put a bonding screw. My understanding this was the reason for the lightning striking and hitting the camp to begin with. This was the only explanation they could come up with at the time. It was sure one experience I will never forget.
