Wrong Number, Right Time
by Carly

Two years ago, the strangest thing happened. My husband was working out of town as he has to do quite often. He almost, always calls me as soon as gets back to his hotel room after the days work, before he goes to dinner with the guys he works with. I usually get his call between 5 and 7:00 p.m. This night was different and for good reason.

I was sitting at home wondering why I had not heard from my husband when the phone finally rang at 9:00 p.m. He was very upset. He began to tell me that he had just tried to call me and had dialed his parent's house by accident. He said: Can you go over there right now; something is wrong with dad. He told me that his mother had answered the phone and he could tell she was very upset and at first she wouldn't say what was wrong. Finally he said: Mom, tell me what's the matter. She told him that his father had fallen about 30 minutes before he called and he couldn't get up and he didn't want her to call anyone to help. At this point she was crying. He told her that he was going to hang up and call me and she said okay. We live about five minutes away. I told my husband I would go see what was going on and call him as soon as I knew.

Before I left our house, I thought to call my husband's sister, who lived even closer to their parents than we do and told her what had happened. When I got to my in-laws, it appeared at first that his dad had just slipped on a rug when he got up out of bed to go to the bathroom. My sister-in-law and her husband had gotten there just before me and had already helped him back onto the bed. He told us that he was fine, but he never did make it to the bathroom. He was almost joking about it, but he still had to go, so we went to help him back up. When we helped him to a sitting position on the side of his bed, that's when we realized something was terribly wrong with him. He was gray in color, the side of his mouth had started to drop down. I felt terrible. I had already called my husband and told him his dad was okay, and now I had to call him back and tell him that I thought his dad was having a stroke.

When he got to the hospital, the doctors told us not only that he had a stroke, but he was also bleeding in his brain. One of the strangest things about his condition was he never lost consciousness. He was alert and talking to us the whole time and, thank God, he still is to this day. He has some damage, of course, and it has been a long, slow battle for him. I am convinced that if it hadn't been for my husband dialing the wrong number that night, we would not be getting ready to celebrate his dad's 83rd birthday in a few days.
