Haunted Reflection
by Gloria F.

I have come to accept paranormal as being normal in my life. For several years I lived in a house that I knew contained the ghost of a man. I was a single mother, but I never felt that I was alone in that house. I didn't see him (my children did) but often, if I were sitting quietly, watching TV, reading or sewing, I would become aware that he had entered the room. It was a comfortable feeling and I had no sense that I should be frightened or in any way concerned. For some reason I felt that I knew he was 47 years old when he died, but he never communicated anything else about himself. He just wanted some companionship.

My daughter remembers waking up in the night to see him standing at the end of her bed, staring at her. She didn't feel any sense of fear either.

I was renting the house. The owner sold the land to the city but the house had to be moved. I moved. The city looked for someone who would buy the house and move it, but as time passed it was rumored that they were going to donate the house to the fire department for fire practice in order to get the house off of the property so they could expand a city facility.

As the rumor persisted, I began to sense the ghost calling me back to the house, but I became afraid of going there. The house was in a central, downtown location, but I would drive blocks out of my way to avoid driving past the house. I began to sense that the ghost was afraid of the house being burned down and I represented his way out of there. I feared that if I went near that house the ghost would inhabit my body. He would leave the house and I would be left there.

I lived with that foreboding for several weeks and then it suddenly disappeared. Thinking I had conquered my irrational fear I decided to drive past the house as a gesture of triumph over the ghost, but as I passed the property I saw that the house was gone. I found out it had been moved. The town was a waterfront fishing village on Vancouver Island that had grown. The house had been moved to Quadra Island, one mile across the water.

Years later, two of my daughters, young women by then, decided to go and talk to the people who bought the house. The people did have a sense that the house was haunted. They allowed my daughters in to see the changes they had made. The girls told me that they sensed the ghost had moved with the house and he was content. The owners of the house had nothing to fear.

While I lived there, I started reading books on the paranormal, including some with instructions on how to contact the "other side." In my bedroom, which was very small, the mirror dresser of the bedroom suite faced the door. One evening, I walked into the bedroom to get something; it was dark in there except for the light from the hallway and as I reached for the item I wanted on the dresser, I glanced up at the mirror.

My eyes locked onto the eyes in the reflection and I couldn't break away. The reflection was mine, but it wasn't me looking back at me. No matter how hard I tried to look away I could not break the lock on those eyes. I was finally able to throw my whole body onto the bed beside me. but it was many weeks before I could find the courage to look, tentatively at first, at my own reflection in that bedroom mirror.
