Face at the Window
by Della

This event occurred approximately 43 years ago (I am now 46) and seems as vivid in my memory after all these years. I was put to bed by my mother, and as it was summertime she left the curtains open to let the remainder of daylight save her from having to leave the bedroom light on until I slept, as I was afraid of the dark. My bedroom was upstairs and situated at the back of the house with old-fashioned, four-paned sash windows, which on a summer night seemed most inviting as I lay there listening to my friend's laughing and playing out in the lane. Wishing that I could be out there with them, I lay looking toward the window, wide awake and the equivalent in a three-year-old's terms of being pissed off when suddenly a face appeared in the top right-hand corner pane of my bedroom window. I got one hell of a shock and the being looking at me knew that I was seeing him/her, for as I opened my mouth and started to shriek, he jerked his face back out of sight.

My mother came racing upstairs stopped my tears but not my fears. She said that it was just a bad dream, drew the curtains, turned the light on for me and left me to go to sleep. The features of the being I cannot forget, and the best way to describe them are the way a four or five year old would draw a picture of the sun: a large round ball with a nose, eyes and smiling mouth drawn on in black crayon. That is the only part of the whole thing that I question, not the fact that this was a sentient being or that there were features that stood out on the face, but the crayoned black part. I have stuck that on myself as that maybe it was the only way a three-year-old mind could grasp what she was seeing.

I have never seen this being since, but then again the following day I was transferred back to my own bedroom, which was facing the front of the house and which I shared with my teenage sister. The room that I had been in was a small room, usually slept in by my brother (alone), and I have reminded him about this since we have been adults, but he remembers seeing nothing strange either in nor outside of the house.

I have just remembered something odd. My brother who was 10 or 11 at the time, had to be moved to a downstairs room to sleep as my mother kept finding him on the stairs or landing in the middle of the night and she worried that he would fall down the stairs during one of his "sleepwalking" episodes. My sister (who was 10 years older than I) and I had shared a room, but I imagine that she, on hearing that my brother was to sleep downstairs, asked if she could have a room to herself. I wonder if it was my brother that the being expected to see as he peered into the window that night, and I now find myself thinking that this could well have been the cause of my brother's so-called "sleepwalking." I cant believe that I forgot about his sleepwalking and the switching round of rooms. How could I possibly have remembered the face, but not the rest of it until now? I cant get over this.

Was my brother being abducted and that this was the real cause of him being found in different parts of the house during the night? Was I too taken that night? Did they return after I'd fallen asleep or did they seek out my brother in his downstairs room? Did they take us both or even all three - my teenage sister too?
