STORY OF THE MONTH
by Lorie M.
Less than a year ago, I moved into a five-bedroom house in southeast Portland, Oregon. I thought I had found the perfect house. At the time, I was on section eight housing, and for those of you that don't know what that is, it is low-income housing for people with low incomes. I often wondered why I was allowed to rent this house and not the many others who had applied. My credit was less than blemish-free and, of course, the section eight thing had me puzzled! This was a two-story, well-maintained, security-gated home and beautifully landscaped. When I was told I could rent the house, I was so pleased.
I moved in a week later. I never felt any sort of bad vibes upon touring the home. I felt good, as a matter of fact. After moving in and unloading all my stuff, I was finally home and starting to get comfortable. A week or so into my move, feeling tired, I laid down on the sofa to rest (all kids tucked into bed and fast asleep) I feel asleep. I woke up at 1:45 a.m. to what sounded like a big man in cowboy boots walking up the stairs to my front door, only no one knocked. I was so scared! The way the house was set up, you couldn't see onto the front porch from looking out the front window, and there was no peek hole on the front door. I opened the door and no one was there. I know what I heard and still nothing or no one there.
Being single, no guns in the house and damned scared, I called my mom. We were on the phone talking and I was feeling a little less scared and about to hang up when the re-dial button was heard. She said it wasn't her and I knew it wasn't me, so I became scared all over again. After having talked some more, I again was okay and about to hang up and it happened again... the re-dial was heard again. I then knew that the only other phone was in the basement, so I went down there and unplugged the damned thing and still it happened again. I woke up my kids and left in the middle of the night I was so terrified!
About two weeks later, my sister was staying at my house. Again, I was on the sofa in the front room about half asleep and she was in the kitchen ironing her work clothes. When we had started talking about the weird things and noises that had been occurring in the house. I was looking at a mirror that was hanging on the wall. The mirror was hanging in a way that you could view about an inch of light through the mini blind that was hung on the front window. I hung the mirror there after I heard those footsteps on the front porch, therefore I could see at the least a shadow through a beam of light. As I was looking at the mirror and the beam of light that was shinning through I noticed that there was a darkness through the beam of light causing a dark shadow and as I stared at it more, I noticed what seemed to be a moving shadow. The more I looked, the more I could see this shadow more clearly. It was the shadow of what appeared to be a 7-8 inch woman who seemed very busy with her hands. I am not sure if she was doing dishes, dealing cards or what. But her hands were moving rapidly!
Well, I was freaking out thinking just maybe I was seeing things! So I called my sister in from the kitchen and she had no idea what I had saw or what I called her for. She sat on the sofa closest to the shadow. I said, "Hey, Marg. If I show you something, swear you won't freak out and you will tell me what you see?" I told her to tell me what was causing that blockage of light through that ray of light? She said, "Ummm, I am not sure/" Well, the more she looked at it, the more freaked out she became. She said, "Oh my God! What is that?" She then told me what she was viewing and it was the same thing I saw: a seven to eight inch lady moving rapidly with her hands! When my 12-year-old son arouse for school that morning, he witnessed the same thing.
I taped the mini blind to the frame of the window so the light no longer shinned in. I know it was still there although I never took that tape off until I moved! After having so many weird things take place in that house, I called the property manager and asked her if any people previous to me had experienced any ghostly happenings. After she got back to me, she said that the lady that lived in the home before me said she could feel a weird presence in the house after 8:00 p.m. Isn't it funny? This house was the only house in the neighborhood that had security gates on the doors and windows. I think the owner of the house thought someone was trying to get in and put top dollar into security, and what she didn't realize is that what she was hiding from was already in the house. Six months after having made that phone call to the properly manager, the owner of the house decided to sell the home. I was sad to be moving again, but relieved to be leaving this house.
