The Ghost of Woolyburger
by Kari L.

On November 8, 2002, five of my friends - Kara, Tiff, Abby, David (my boyfriend), Ryan (Tiff's boyfriend)- and I decided to go to this "haunted grave yard" called Woolyburger. Before I get started with what I saw and what happened, I will tell you a little about what myths are going around about Woolyburger and that have been around for some time:

  • Two people were dared to stay the whole day and night at Woolyburger and so they did and it is said that the graveyard drove them crazy and they killed themselves.
  • Before Woolyburger was a graveyard, people who used to go fishing in the lake that is there, like in the 1800s or so, would have freaky things happen to them, and some people would would supposedly have accidents and fall in the water and drown, or stick them selves with the hooks that they used!
  • Devil worshipers go there and sacrifice things like animals.

On to the story of what happened to me and my friends...

We all piled into Ryan's and David's trucks and we were off following Ryan to his house so he could change his shoes and grab a flashlight and a baseball bat for protection. After that we were on our way to Woolyburger cemetery. When we got there, we parked a little ways away from the graveyard so that the cops wouldn't come back there, because it was at night when we went. As we unloaded the two trucks, I slipped on my hoodie and then we were off walking on the side of the road past the river that runs next to Woolyburger. We crossed the dark but somehow lit road to the entrance of Woolyburger and made our way past the gate.

When we approached the gate, I felt something come over me. I am not sure what, but I wasn't scared. There was a long path surrounded by woods and tall trees. We started walking down the path. I was not scared at all. I was thinking, "It is just a graveyard. What could go wrong?" But, wow, was I wrong!

We got to the actual graveyard where we could see the gravestones. Then I heard something like leaves brushing up against themselves, like someone was moving - and trust me, we were all still. So I look over to the area where it was coming from and, lo and behold, I see something that I never thought I would see in my life: There stood a man about 6'2" that had three cuts on his left check, really pale skin and a ripped shirt. There was a big cut on his chest where his heart was - this cut was deep but it wasn't bleeding, and it didn't look dry and it didn't look like it was wet or fresh - it was just there.

I told my friends that I saw something over there, pointing to the area that I saw it. We pointed the flashlight over to that area and it was gone - nowhere to be seen! Tiff and Abby were too scared, so they started back for the truck. At the time, I really didn't think much of it until David and Kara went to read one of the gravestones and I heard someone walking in the leaves coming closer to us. I looked around and didn't see anything or anyone. Abby, Tiff and Ryan were already practically back to the trucks and then that is when I started to freak!

I told David to come and Kara to come to and get out of there. On the way back that long trail that leads back to the graveyard, Kara, David and I felt and heard a really creepy wind that was bone-chilling. We had the feeling to run, so we started running.

When we got back to the trucks, Tiff told us that on her way back to the trucks she looked over into the woods and there was a man hissing at her.

Ever since that happened, I have been trying to find answers to what I saw and why. Later that week, we went back because I wanted to see the spot where I saw the "man" and I wanted to look at the gravestone next to where I had seen him. When I looked at the gravestone, it was four-sided. It was a family: a mother, Mary Surver, 21; a father, James Surver, 20; and two children, one four years old and the other four months. The one thing that I noticed was the date of when they died. They died on the same day, same year in 1813. It was strange, but I figured that they could have died in a fire or some sort of accident.
