The
Poltergeist Tale
by Denise Mathieu
I have live in this house with my kids and husband for about eight years now. But for the last year or so, there have been some strange things happening that cannot be explained. My husband thinks I'm crazy and laughs at me. But my kids, who are 14 and 13, have witnessed some of these occurrences.
What first happened to me really freaked me out. My son was in the living room, two rooms away from where my daughter and I were. We were standing at the back screen door looking out at something, when all of a sudden I was hit with something directly in the middle of my back. I looked back when it hit the floor and realized it was a quarter. I picked it up and went in to ask my son why he threw it at me, because it wasn't funny. He said he never did, and from where he was sitting, there was no way he could have. I was puzzled, and a little freaked, while my daughter was scared, but still thinking her brother did it anyway.
The next incident happened about two days later. My bathroom has no electrical plug in it, but there is one just outside the bathroom door. I had my radio in the bathroom, plugged in to the outlet and was still able to shut and lock the door. I had a good song on, was in the shower singing, when all of a sudden the radio shut off. I wasn't happy. I yelled to my son to plug the radio back in. I turned off the shower, wrapped myself with a towel, opened the door, looked, and realized he must have been playing and plugged it back in. I asked him why he did that, but he was clueless as to what I was talking about. I said "whatever," closed the door and just went to look at the radio, and realized someone had manually pushed the slider on the radio to the off position, so my son didn't unplug it after all. I was totally freaked by that point. I was sure someone was in the bathroom with me. I got dressed fast and left the room. Things from that point got weirder.
Last summer, July 2004, my son went to camp for counselor training, and I was to take over his paper route while he was gone. There are apartment buildings to deliver to, and I have keys to those buildings to get in. My daughter was about two feet from me, and I was on the couch next to a little end table and we were watching TV. I always threw those apartment keys on this table so I knew where they were when it was time to leave. All of a sudden, I heard a clang under that table. But I never took notice and just continued to watch TV until it was time for the papers. When I looked on the table for those keys, they were gone. And I always threw them onto the middle of the table. I was upset because I only had a bit of time to finish these papers; I was running out of time and couldn't find the keys. Then I looked underneath and there they were. The clang we heard earlier were those keys hitting my son's barbells on his weights. What made it even more freaky was that those keys were previously in the middle of the table, not the edge. So how did they fall off? I figure they didn't. I just knew the only explanation was they fell through the table, because that is where they landed -- they were directly in the middle of under that table.
My daughter really was scared by that point. Stuff like that only happen in movies, not to us, not in the real world. But the keys went missing several times after that, too, but then showed up on the table right where I had put them. I can honestly say, there have been so many things happen that I can't even begin to tell them all, nor remember. Only the ones that really made me wonder have stuck in my mind.
There have been a few times that I was in the bathroom late at night, and the light flickered quite a bit on me, like there was someone in there with me. I see shadows late at night when I'm watching TV alone, but I keep telling myself that it's just my eyes playing tricks on me, even when I know that they're not. Also, when my son was at camp that summer, I was sitting at the computer, which is directly under his room upstairs. I heard someone rolling around in his bed. I heard the springs make noise. like someone was moving from side to side. This went on for a few minutes then stopped. I ruled out anybody being in there because everyone was sleeping in their own beds, and my two cats were sleeping in the basement.
Off and on for the last few weeks, while again everyone is sleeping but me (I'm the nighthawk), I hear my daughter's bedroom door open and close by itself. I know it's not her because our floors make noise when someone walks across it, and nobody did. At other times I hear someone, not my daughter, lightly walking back and forth across my daughter's floor. It creeps me out sometimes. I move to the other side of the couch, watching to see if something is coming down the stairs afterward. Nothing ever does, but I see things at the corner of my eye a lot.
This incident is rather embarrassing, but I need to tell it. One night a few weeks ago, I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. It was quiet and dark, other than the nightlight outside the bathroom door. This being on, it left a light glow on the freezer just around the corner that I could see. Since everyone was in bed, I kept the bathroom light off, kept the door open, and sat down on the toilet. I was listening, hoping nobody was going to come downstairs, but ready to shut the door if someone did. All of a sudden, I saw a shadow across the freezer from the nightlight. I said, "Who is it," but there was no answer. Thinking it was my kids, I quickly shut the bathroom door. I finished, got up, opened the door, but nobody was around; they were all still sleeping. Not sure what the heck it was, I ran to the couch and just sat there wondering what the heck was in the house.
People tell me it's my grandma. I don't think so, yet I don't really know. She died almost 19 years ago, so why visit now? I sometimes wear a chain of hers, with a ring from her on it, but my husband found three quarters with the year I was born, had them drilled and put those on that chain with the ring. Seems everytime I wear it, things happen, but they still happen when I don't wear it.
My oldest daughter, who lives on her own, gave me a porcelain doll that was hers. She said it used to just fall off her shelf on its own. She didn't want it anymore. It scared her, so she gave it to me two years ago. And that's about when all this stuff started happening. I don't know what to think anymore. I just know some things scare me.
Last night was the strangest. My son and his friend were playing an online game, and they were using one of my grandma's chairs to sit on. I told them to take it easy on it because these chairs are older than my husband (ha ha). Anyhow, they ended up breaking one of the legs on it. About half an hour later, they were getting their shoes on to leave, and my son's friend looked at me and asked if I've ever seen the ghost. I said no, I don't know for sure, and the second I was finishing saying that, all the power went out, FAST. It was mostly in this area, but still. I'm not sure if it was him who started that, but it was strange.
After my son came back from walking this kid home, we were talking on the couch, and every time my son and I brought up this kid's name, my lamp by the computer flicked on and off. And when he went to shower afterward, he thought about what had happened with his friend, only the bathroom light went on and off; no other lights in the house did it. Just the thought of him made the lights flicker.
That's my tale. I wanted to write in for awhile, but just never did, until now. Things seem to be happening more frequently now. I'm not sure what's here, or who, but I know it is. There are witnesses, so I know I'm not losing my mind.
