Guardian Angel's Advice

It was late May, 1989. I had been in a very abusive marriage for the past 17 years and had resigned myself to the thought that there was nothing more in life. My husband had not worked in the past seven years, and was going to school to upgrade his degree. Unfortunately, he took the same three courses every semester. I had learned to never question him on anything.

It was about 7 in the morning and I was in the bathroom combing my hair and finishing getting ready for work. My husband was in bed, sleeping. Suddenly, a voice spoke: "Leave." The voice was clear and firm. I looked around and found no one. Certain that I was imagining things, I resumed my grooming. The voice spoke again: "Leave or you will not live."

I went to an attorney that very day, leaving work to do so. The attorney chided me and told me if I didn't leave then, I never would. I took his scorn to heart, and left that very day, with just the clothes on my back. I spent a couple days each with various friends, moving frequently.

Was I in danger? About ten months earlier, my husband and his girlfriend had each insured their spouses for $100,000, with triple indemnity for accidental death. They both followed me after they found out where I was, and he kept a .38 in a camera bag as he followed me. He stalked me for years, and I left the state to get away. Finally, after many years of telephone calls, where someone just listened, I filed a complaint with the FBI. The calls ended. After all, stalking across state lines becomes a Federal offense.

My guardian angel only spoke to me once, but thanks to the voice, I am alive today. I have no doubt that my husband and his girlfriend had plans to permanently retire, and my angel impelled me to leave.
