Baby Monitor Ghost
by Pete Rankin

I live in Edinburgh, Scotland. I was very interested to read a piece on the net about a haunting that started with voices on a baby monitor. About 10 years ago, I suffered something similar, which resulted in my family and I having to leave a house that I had lived in for 20 years. My daughter was three years old at the time and my wife and I had been using a baby monitor since she was just a baby. For a few days before the monitor incident, strange things had been happening in the house, unmistakable sounds of heavy footsteps running up my indoor staircase, doors slamming, even the a voice saying my name very close to my ear. My daughter came through one evening complaining that she was unable to sleep as all her clothes were dancing round the room. When I checked her room, indeed all her clothes were scattered around the room.

Some time later, I was lying on the my bed staring into the dark. The baby monitor was on as usual and I was having trouble getting off to sleep. My little girl's breathing sounded a bit heavy and there was the occasional "bing" sound coming from the monitor, nothing that strange. Gradually, I could hear what sounded like very heavy male breathing coming from the monitor, getting more and more urgent. I thought "what on earth" and sat up and clicked on the bedside lamp. I was astounded to see that my little girl was lying with my wife on the other side of the bed. She would often crawl in without my knowing in the middle of the night. I shook my wife, woke her up and told her something odd. No sooner had I done this than all I can describe as tormented male screaming started billowing out of the thing -- a horrible, vile voice screaming, "Help me, help me, help me" and making the most awful sounds that words can't describe.

My wife and I just stared at each other in total terror. My first thought was that some sort of lunatic had somehow gained access to our house. I grabbed a baseball bat that I kept under the bed (just in case). By this time the monitor was just shrieking and screaming in the most dreadful way so I pulled the plug from the wall and crashed into my daughters room ready to face whatever was making the sounds. Well guess what, there was nothing there. The room was totally normal and the broadcast end of the monitor was sitting in the corner of the room unplugged.

I kid you not when I say it was the most terrified I have ever been in my life, I sat up all night with every light on chain smoking. My wife somehow got back to sleep. Over the next few days I told many people what had happened, but the more I told the story, the more crazy it sounded even to me. It's as if your brain does something to rub it out so you can cope with what's happened; it ends up feeling like a dream, except my wife was there, so we both know it was true. We never again felt comfortable in the house I had lived in most of my life in and within a few months moved out.
