The Passenger
by Debra

In March 2000, my two teens and I moved in with my oldest son, in a house that he was buying. The move also changed the route my daughter, then aged 17, would need to drive to go see her girlfriend. The road she would take, is called “Telegraph Road,” and in the past, we knew of at least two deaths that occurred on that road, both of questionable circumstances. I would always worry about her traveling that road, especially after dark, because of winding turns, deer always crossing the road, and the fact that a long section of that road, is out through an uninhabited area.

One night, on the way home from her friend’s home, my daughter happened to look up into her review mirror and got the worst fright of her life. In the back seat of her car, sat a young girl, in a white colored nightgown. She had long hair, my daughter later told me, and then all of a sudden, she was gone. After that first time, the little passenger would show up in the back seat every once in a while, and every time the girl did materialize, my daughter would come home in a tearful panic.

She told her friends about the passenger in the back seat, and one of my older son’s friends over heard the conversation, and went pale. He also had the privilege of having the SAME little passenger in the back seat of his car, as he drove through the SAME area that my daughter had her experiences. My daughter’s best friend told her about a time when her (then) boyfriend and her had gone parking. Where? That same section of road! There was a short pull off area, that they had pulled into, to be off the main road. While she and her boyfriend were busy within the vehicle, some thing got busy on the outside of the vehicle…hitting it, rocking it ever so slightly. It scared them so bad that they tore out of there, and never went parking again!

We’ve never researched Telegraph Road’s history, but if we did, I’m sure that we’d find a few tragedies had taken place along the road. The two that I mentioned above, were recent incidents. One of my own best friend’s sister was killed on a sharp corner on that road, and the officials never determined “why” it’d happened. She was not intoxicated, and she knew that road very well…yet on that fateful night, she didn’t make the corner and slammed into a telephone pole, killing her instantly. The next accident happened at couple of years later, at a different spot along Telegraph Road. It’s not really clear just what happened, but it ended up that a man ‘hit’ another man, who had just gotten out of a vehicle, and killed him. The driver knew he’d hit something, and panicked, and took off. Both, the driver and the deceased were intoxicated. Through investigation, the officers, were able to find the guy who had hit-and-run and killed this man, and he was charged with manslaughter.
