Ghost of Samoa
by Samoa Moni

As a little boy growing up in Malae'imi, American Samoa, I've heard many ghost stories from family members. During that time I always used to think that they would tell me Samoan ghost stories just to scare me, until I encountered one myself.

It was 1998. My father and I would always wake up 5 o'clock every weekday morning to go to church. We lived in the Malaeimi Valley area, so you must imagine how dark is was at 5 o'clock in the morning. As I was in the car with my dad driving to church, we always drove through a dirt road in the area where nothing but trees and bushes are in sight.

My dad was driving, and I noticed someone standing in the bushes looking at the car. I thought to myself, "It's probably a drunk or somebody." But it couldn't be. It was a glowing white person-figure just standing in the bushes looking at the car. I noticed another thing about the person. He had no face! The facial area of the being was just totally pitch black! I couldn't even move. My eyes were swelling up with tears. I couldn't even speak or yell. I wanted to, but I just couldn't. What made it worst was my dad's driving. He always drove slowly when it came to dirt roads. Just to avoid the pot holes.

When we got to the cathedral, I burst into tears. My dad asked me what was wrong, so I told him what I saw. He said not to worry. He told me to come into church and pray. And so I did. We got home after church, and he explained to me about what I saw. He told me the area in the Malaeimi Valley is an old Samoan battlefield! So in my own words, I do believe in ghosts. I've seen it with my own eyes!
