L.A. Suburb Poltergeist
by Andrea
I grew up in Los Angeles,California. My experience took place in a suburb, I'm not really sure which. My grandmother on my mother's side rented a house that was behind a hair salon. It was probably 1960. My mother and I had gone to visit her. It was the first time I remember visiting. My grandmother's house was an older home and in the front room she had a Murphy bed. The first night we were there, my mother and I were to spend the night. I was told to take a bath before bedtime. The bathroom was at the end of a hallway and off the hallway were two bedrooms.
I was in the bathtub. I remember dawdling as most kids do in the bathtub. I could hear my mom and grandma talking in the kitchen way down the hall. I looked over to the side of the bathroom floor where there was a scale to weigh yourself, and above that was the towel rack on the wall with a towel hanging on it. I suddenly saw two bare feet. then legs, obviously of a man, then a skirt, like a robe in the old biblical days. The image went up, like you would pull the shade of a window and see outside, then a waist tied with a black fabric tie, hands and arms.
Of course I screamed as loud as I could. It really scared me. Suddenly it vanished. The weird thing was you could see through the image, I could see the scale and the towels etc. My mom and grandma came running into the room, I couldn't speak and they were asking me what was wrong, while they dried me off. When we got into the living room, I was pretty scared but finally told them what I saw. My grandma kind of snickered and said, "Oh that is just (a man's name); he won't hurt you." I've never said his name to this day.
That evening my mom and I were pretty shook up. She believed me. As we were discussing this, my grandma acted like we were being silly. My mom was insistent that we call a minister and have the house blessed the next day. I was put on the Murphy bed that night with my mom. I didn't sleep much that night. I remember she had a little dog named Coco and he kept growling at the hallway and his hair was standing up. He would stay backed into the corner of the room all night.
The next morning the really scary thing happened. Mom had called the church bishop to come out to bless the house. They arrived earlier that morning, I know it was before lunch. We told them what happened and asked them to bless the house. The bishop started to pray and tell the spirit to leave. All of a sudden books started flying off the bookcase, the dog started howling as if in pain. I was horrified. That poor Bishop was pretty shook up. He said he couldn't do anything because someone wanted it there. They left pretty quickly.
For years this (spirit) or whatever he was talked with my grandma and terrified us on our visits. My granddad would not sleep in the house. There was a small house behind that he used. I don't know what that thing was and I could tell other occurrences about it, but that was my introduction to evil spirit or whatever it was. It still baffles me.
