Phantom Cat
by Paul N.

Early in the morning, while still dark, I sometimes have a feeling as though a cat is walking around on my bed. It is a very definite and real sensation. I have had this at least once per year for most of my life, but spoke about it for the first time a few years ago. The thing that has prompted me to look for some web-based information on this phenomenon is that it happened to me this morning and I was fully awake at the time, so it is not exactly like a sleep disorder, at least I think it is not. I will admit that it happens usually when in bed, although it has happened while lying down watching TV late at night too.

The sensation is very clear and definite, exactly like the footsteps of a normal sized house cat walking gently around on top of my bed linen, sometimes on top of me too, patting around for somewhere to lie down. Eventually it finds a spot, usually laying up against me, but not always, and lies down. If I move too much while it is walking around the sensation will disappear. It will not be repeated twice in a night, although this could be because it happens early in the morning and I get out of bed soon after it happens.
