Close Encounter in Nevada
by Marcel D.

I started out driving through Nevada, heading out from Reno at about midnight on my way to Wyoming. It was during the gas crisis of 1973. I was told as I filled my tank that the Nevada Highway Patrol was making everyone drive 55 even in the middle of the desert. About 15 miles past the outskirts of town I stayed behind a big truck to "draft" him and save gas, but after about 30 minutes I got tired of looking at his back end (if you know what I mean) and believing that at 1 a.m. I might not be as closely watched I passed the truck and headed out into the desert to continue my trip.

About an hour later, I noticed in my side view mirror that there were a couple lights in the sky about 1/4 mile behind my car, and they were clearly tracking my car. I began to play games with this "light." I sped up; it first got farther then got closer. When I went around turns in the hills, it stayed at the same place it had maintained. I could see it following the road, but I couldn't tell exactly what it was. I assumed it was a helicopter because its motion was so "wiggly" and it was able to take any curve and even went from one side of the road to the other several times. This cat-and-mouse game went on for well over two hours through all sorts of areas and topography.

I started to get mad when it continued, thinking about the cost of tracking a little car way out in the middle of nowhere. Then I noticed it was tracking me closer and closer until when I got back to the flatlands it was no more than a couple of hundred yards behind me. It was a dark, roundish shadow. I noticed that it had some funny lights that seemed to go on when I went over 55 and turned off when I went under. I did that a few times just to see if I could "control" the lights. I was getting madder as this just kept going on. It got down to about 50 yards behind my car and I went through another hilly area and it had to make all sorts of moves to avoid the trees, but it was still following me and getting closer.

It became very unnerving being alone in the middle of nowhere with this thing obviously following me. Finally, I decided that I was going to have grounds for reporting this (to me) rogue patrolman. So coming out of that hilly area on a downslope to the straightaway, I put my car up to about 110 mph. It disappeared. I laughed. All of a sudden, my car's interior was bathed in an extremely bright red light and I looked in my mirror and it was five or 10 feet behind my car with red and blue lights and a sparkling spiral light that suddenly turned on between the other two right outside my car rear window, and my car radio was blasting static.

What I saw was just like Richard Dreyfus in Close Encounters when he was stopped at the train crossing. I slammed on my brakes to try to get him to hit me because I was so mad I figured he would have to explain why he was tailing a little car in the dead of night in the middle of nowhere. I heard a sound of something going right over my head. Now stopped in the middle of the interstate, I looked down to unbuckle my belt to get out and upon emerging from the car, I expected to get arrested. It was dead silent. I stayed there, furious at whoever it was that had acted like that, but it stayed silent and eventually I started driving, went into the next town and reported this incident to the Governor's office.

Ten years later, I got a call from a man who needed information, and after we did some official business I asked him what he did for a living and he told me he worked for the Nevada Highway patrol. He denied the NHP ever did anything like that. I just blurted out my story and he listened. He then described some details that I hadn't told him about the encounter. I asked him how he knew and he told me that the same thing had happened to four other patrol cars at the same place. The officers had either left the force or moved to another area, one being Las Vegas. This was not a back road, this was the main interstate. I always heard about sightings and I could never get totally excited about things in the sky in the distance. This thing whatever it was was 15-20 feet behind my car with an incredibly big bright light so I know it wasn't swamp gas or some normal thing. To this day I cant watch that scene in Close Encounters when the lights come right up to his vehicle without getting chills. That was me.
