Ghostly Slap on the Back
by Tim B.

My wife and I recently took over her family's house. It was built between 1850 and 1900 in Plymouth, Mass. and we are the 5th generation to live there. Several of her family members have passed away in the house and some have made themselves known by flickering lights when my daughter is on the computer. She is used to this and she will say, "Grandpa, stop it. You're scaring me." To which the lights stop flickering. We have never had any negative feelings or experiences in the house.

We recently began renovating the entire property and we have had several people come and work on the house, two of whom were friends. Keith, the carpenter, and Jay, a laborer. Keith was working downstairs in the basement apartment and Jay was sanding walls upstairs in the main house. The radio was on low and we were going to run some errands. We told Jay we would be back soon and we left. When we returned, Jay was sitting at our kitchen table looking a little shaky, to say the least. I asked him what was wrong. He replied, "Is your house haunted?" I said that we do have at least two ghosts we know of, and why did he ask. He said that he was up a ladder sanding the walls. He had cranked up the radio and was singing along to some rock songs when someone slapped him square on the back. He said he turned round and no one was there.

He then went into the kitchen looking for Keith to see if he was playing tricks on him. Keith was still downstairs and could not have come up without being heard. (It's a big old wooden house that makes a lot of noise.) At that point, Jay said that the digital volume control on the radio began to turn itself down and then the radio turned off completely. This completely freaked him out - and Jay is a big guy. Hearing this, my wife mentioned that her grandmother, who lived and died in the house, hated loud music. We think it was her way of telling Jay to turn the radio down. Jay still works for us at times, but now he watches over his shoulder while he works. We still hear strange bumps in the night, but it's never anything scary. We all talk out loud when we think one of the ghosts are around... it's like an extended family.
