ER Spirit
by Tamara C.

One of my duties at the hospital where I worked a few years ago was to take school children on tours of the facility. I always had another staff person conduct the tours with me to help provide extra supervision for the children.

One spring, I had a co-worker of mine named Sally assisting me with a group of about 30 kids on a tour. When we stopped by the Emergency Department for a visit, one of the physicians took the children into a large room to show them how casts are made. Sally and I followed the children into the room and stood with our backs to a wall to keep an eye on the kids. Suddenly, I felt a child run behind me (between my back and the wall). As he did so, he put his hand on my lower back to push me away from the wall to make room for himself to run by. The rush of air created by the running child made my skirt flutter in the direction he was traveling. I thought that it was one of the children who had somehow gotten behind in the tour and was rushing past me to get to the cast demonstration. I turned my head to look at who it was and saw that there was no one there! Every single child was across the room with the doctor, deeply engrossed in what he was showing them. I was very startled, but was already starting to think of a logical explanation for what had just occurred.

It was then that I looked at Sally and saw the surprised expression on her face. She said "I just felt a child run behind me, but when I looked to see who it was, there was no child there." We had both experienced the exact same thing.
