Past Life in the Tower
by Amber P.

This is a story related to me by my grandmother. She swears that it is entirely true. When my grandmother was a child, she would often have this recurring dream. In the dream, she would be running up a circular flight of stairs in a cold, castle-like building. She knew that she was running away from someone for fear of her life, but she didn't know who it was. She was wearing a long dress that she held up in both hands as she ran, as if she were in another time period. She said that on the other side of the wall bordering the stairs there was a large room of some kind. She ran frantically up the stairs to a small room at the top. Then she ran to a small window and tried to call out for help. She turned around, and in a flash, she was killed.

My grandmother remembered this dream throughout her adulthood. When she was in her forties, she described to my grandfather the room she saw at the top of the stairs. He, being a skilled artist, sketched the room as she described it, and she agreed that it was an accurate depiction of the room in her dream.

Several years later, they went on a trip to England. One of the places they visited was the Tower of London. As soon as they walked into the part called the White Tower, my grandmother instantly felt the strongest feeling of having been there before. As they went further in she began to get shaky and felt a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. They came across the same circular flight of stairs she had seen in her dream. As she ascended the stairs, her emotions heightened and she became unsteady on her feet because her legs were shaking, and she had to lean on my grandfather for support. They found out that the large chamber on the other side of the wall, which my grandmother was running from in her dream, was a torture chamber. The final shock came when they got to the top of the stairs, high up in the tower. There was the very same room from her dream! My grandfather even commented how the room looked very much like the sketch he made.

What could explain this? Did my grandmother live a past life as a victim of the torture chamber? She had never before seen any pictures of the White Tower, nor had she ever heard it described. Perhaps the dream is what I like to call "genetic memory" - a memory that is passed down from the ancestors to the descendants. Whatever it was, it was an experience my grandmother will never forget.
