Vanishing Cat
by Pedro

We had a cat stay with us for a while, and while I am not a cat lover by nature, she was special. Her owner had left the area and she was cold and VERY hungry when we took her in. She liked nothing more than eating her food, curling up on my chest and falling sound asleep.

A few weeks later, as cats do, she got to exploring again and made longer and longer forays away from us. Last week, she was hit by a car and killed while I was at work and I felt as though I had lost a friend. I collected her body and after digging a suitable grave, she was laid to rest with a few tears and goodbyes.

After the job was done, I looked up from her gravesite to see her not 10 feet away on the fence with her usual inquisitive look. I like to think she came back to say goodbye as she promptly vanished in front of me with no Hollywood effects -- just not there.
