Weird
Red-Hooded Creature
by Jen B.
It was late. I was at a party in celebration of a play I had directed. At 15 I was the "good girl," so when the drinking and strip poker started, I called my dad to pick me up.
It was around 3:00 a.m. My dad drove and arrived with a smile to bring me home. We live in a dairy town sourounded by dark back roads that make good short cuts, but are a little creepy at night. As we drove home, I noticed movement on the road ahead. I didn't say anything, but suddenly had that feeling of my skin crawling as I looked ahead on the dark road. A rush of fear swept over me as a small creature, approximately three feet in height in a red cloak ran from one side of the two-lane road to the other. Keep in mind, this is a dairy road at 3:00 a.m. with no houses around, only cows and barbed wire fences.
Its movement was strange. It was on two legs and swung its arms as it ran. The way it moved was unnatural. It was almost leaping as it crossed and then dissapeared into some bushes. The porportions were odd, the arms long and the rest of the creature very small. It happened so fast, I blinked hard and told myself... you're seeing things... it's late... it's dark and you're creeping yourself out.
The truck was quiet. I said nothing, waiting. After about three minutes, I looked over at my dad. He was gripping the wheel tight and looked very distraught. And then he asked me softly, "Did you see that?" I exhaled deeply and said, "What did you see?" "Something in red," he whispered.
We both started to describe what we had seen and neither of us could explain it. To this day, I tell the story to people and it gives me chills as I replay the moments in my head. My dad and I joke about it, but are still absolutely perplexed by the red-hooded creature on our dairy road.
