Ghost
of Iraqi Soldier
by Vitor
I was stationed in Iraq from Nov. 2003 to Dec. 2004. However much death and destruction that I saw during my time in Iraq, there is one thing that I encountered that I cannot explain:
I was lying in my bed sometime in October on 2004, and as you may have heard from others, it is not easy to get a good night's sleep there, due to many things.
While lying there fully awake, I suddenly could not breathe. At first I thought that one of my soldiers threw a blue smoke grenade into my hooch as a gag. I immediately sat up and looked into the blue fog, which didn't smell at all like the normal smoke a US smoke grenade makes, but I immediately saw what looked like a face to me in the blue mist. Being terrified, I reached for the 9mm pistol that I slept with under my pillow. I noticed that the face looked foreign somehow... then it hit me.
The face was that of an Iraqi soldier that had recently died in my aid station, or rather brought to my aid station dead. The only thing I could think of at the time, was to tell the face that I didn't want it there. So I screamed at the face, "Get out of here. I don't want you here!" I had heard that somewhere before, so in my mindless terror, I gave it a try and it worked!
I never saw the face again, but to this day it haunts me in my dreams. Now I know that there are many more elaborate ghost stories out there, but this really happened, whether or not you choose to believe this.
