Gargoyle at the Window

The story I am about to relate took place when I was very young, probably under six or seven (I'm 36 now), but I still remember the incident quite well. In my bedroom, I had a window that I had to crank to open and close, and there would be a small open space between the window and the screen. For some reason I remember something made me look toward the window, and I also recall that it was just getting light out, so it must've been early in the morning. My bedroom was on the second floor of our house, and it faced our neighbor's house, separated by a side yard that had a couple of large trees between the two houses.
I looked at the window and saw movement just below the window and heard something like a huffing or grunting sound. I got up thinking it might be my dog, forgetting I was two stories up. I looked out the window and didn't see or hear anything at first, but as I turned around and went back toward my bed, a few feet from the window, I heard a noise against the screen. When I turned back around, I will never forget the sight of what was there in that window.
Pressed against the screen was the most hideous looking face I'd ever seen. It looked like a mix between a baboon and a kind of gargoyle. It was staring right at me. Worst of all, it had a toothy, big grin. Its hands were also pressed against the screen at either side of its face. I don't remember how long we made eye contact before I began screaming for my parents. I ran backward to my bed, and pulled the cover over my head continuing to scream until my parents came in wondering why I was screaming. I told them about the thing looking in the window, but of course there wasn't anything there. My dad went so far as to go outside and look around the side yard, but found nothing. They told me that I was having a nightmare, but I insisted I was awake when I saw it. It was a while before I felt comfortable again sleeping it that room, and for a long time had a problem with the window being open.
