The Hurt Ghost
by Lunar

This story took place in the spring of 2002. My husband and I were at a friend's grandparents' home for an impromptu wedding party. We had been married that March in a courthouse, but we planning a small church wedding for the families. My friend's grandparents used to own a video store. Their basement, which was more like an apartment, with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a large living space, was filled with boxes of videos. We would often go through these boxes, sometimes borrowing the tapes.

Recently, we had been sorting them into their original covers to sell. I must mention now that I didn't really like being alone in this basement. It was just something I never felt comfortable with, but the videos always seem to draw me in. I was in the basement, looking for some videos to borrow. I had found a few and called my new husband to check my selections.

The stairs were in the middle of the basement. He came down the stairs, made a 180-degree turn and proceeded to walk toward me. The two bedrooms were behind me. I hadn't noticed that he had come to a complete stop. Finally, I looked up at him and saw he was staring behind me. "What?" I had asked him: He said nothing, but pointed to the open bedroom door behind me. I turned and saw nothing. He was still looking. After a few minutes, he turned to me and asked if I saw her. "Who?" I asked. "The little girl. Someone hurt her."

I looked into the room again. "What did you see?" The room he was staring into held boxes and the water heater, so maybe he thought he saw something, I first thought.

"The room changed," he said. "I could see a white wall paper and a bed. There was a little girl sitting on the floor, with her knees drawn into her chest and her face into her arms. She was crying, like someone had abused her. She looked up at me with these pleading eyes, but I didn't know what she wanted. Then she just faded"

His voice was cracking as he talked. I asked him to describe the little girl, hoping maybe to see if he was describing anyone familiar. He described a girl with maybe 1960s style fashion, with brown pigtails. I never thought he was lying. I still believe that he saw something in that room that broke his heart. I think today that he may have seen a residual haunting, seeing how my friend's family had lived there since before the 1960s and no little girl died that. Maybe one of the women who once lived there had been hurt and the pain was still in that room. I'll probably never know.
