Disappearing Glasses
by Neil Faulks
I am a serious-minded, 45-year-old male, which is why the following event has unnerved me rather. I live in Birmingham, England, and on Sunday, 25th May this year (2008) I went up to my office at home at around 16.30 to continue scanning family photographs, which I have started to do lately. I wear separate general and reading spectacles, so I took the reading pair with me. I sat at my workstation and swapped my eyeglasses over, placing my normal use pair about 18 inches to the left of me in front of my printer.
I had been scanning for around 20 minutes and decided to make myself a cup of tea downstairs. I turned to my left to get my general spectacles... and they were not there. I got up off my chair to look on the floor in case they had fallen, but nowhere to be seen. I spent the next hour turning the small room inside out in increasing frustration, including turfing out the set of drawers on which the printer stood, but to no avail.
My wife came home just then and I told her what had happened. I sensed the look of disbelief on her face, but she said she'd look anyway. She also looked high and low, including the aforementioned set of drawers. The spectacles could not be found. I donned a spare pair of glasses and spent the next week going about my daily business (which included several more nights in my office working, and searching the room again for those damned spectacles), even going several more times into those drawers for various items.
On Sunday, 1st June, I once again went into my office to work and started at around 15.00. An hour and a half later, I opened a drawer underneath the printer to get something out. I lifted a pair of bagged earphones at the front... and there -- neatly folded up -- were my missing eyeglasses! I really could not believe it and shouted to my wife what had happened. We had both checked that same drawer on numerous occasions and THEY HAD NOT BEEN THERE. Even moreso, I have realised that they had been missing for exactly a week (to the hour) before they turned up.
I do still go into the office, even though this has spooked me a little, but I don't think I would feel the same had I seen or heard anything weird at the time.
