Man's Spirit Saved Future Self

This story was told to me by a friend, Scott. It took place in California around the winter time of 1993.
Scott, his younger brother and his father were on their way to work one cold, foggy morning. It was grape pruning season and Scott hated it. He hated having to work all day with hardly any breaks and freezing. Plus, he had to know how to do the job right and be fast, which Scott wasn't.
They were driving along when they saw someone up ahead on the side of the road, crawling. This man had a bushy moustache and was wearing a red jacket with worn-out jeans. They pulled up and got out. From the expression on his face, they could tell this man was in a lot of pain! They talked to him and found out both of his legs were broken. He said his car was down the road, that he had been in an accident and had been crawling for over a hour looking for help. He said he pulled over to do some maintenance on his car when out of the fog came this big truck and smashed the front door against his legs as he was getting out. The truck kept going it didn't stop; it just disappeared back into the fog.
Scott's father put a blanket over him and told him to stay there, he was going to get help. They drove down a little ways when they came upon the man's car. They couldn't see any damage at all on the driver's door -- no broken glass scattered everywhere. It was in good condition. Then they noticed there was someone in the car on the driver's side. As they looked, they couldn't believe it. It was the same man! The same bushy moustache, red jacket, hair style, eyes... what's going on here!
He was getting ready to get out of the car when they saw some headlights coming toward him. Scott's father blew his horn, one long, loud blast. It distracted the man enough to make him stay in the vehicle for a few seconds. That's when this four-by-four truck comes racing out of the fog, barely missing the man's car. After the truck fled the scene, they went over to see if he was alright.
Everything is kind of strange now... because this man is telling them if they didn't sound the horn when they did, he would've stepped out of the car and gotten killed. He was very grateful and drove away. Scott's father drove down to a friends home where he used a phone to call an ambulance. They then headed back to where the injured man was. He was gone! He didn't crawl away, because if he did he would've left a trail or something on the dirt, but there were none. There were none anywhere! The only thing left was the blanket.
Somehow that man's spirit warned Scott's family of an accident about to happen and used them to help prevent it! Weird!
