Devil
Ghost
by Janine T.
This story is about a house my sister lived in around 1977. It was supposed to be built on an old Indian Burial ground. My sister and her husband were renting this house. It wasn't very big, just old. It had a basement and two upstairs rooms. My sister had a German shepherd dog and he would not go in the basement or upstairs at all.
One night my sister and her husband were home and the doorknob to the basement door started to turn. They got a weapon, thinking someone had broken in the basement and was coming up the stairs. Their dog was growling and they heard footsteps on the stairs. Suddenly it all stopped. My brother-in-law finally got up the nerve to go see if anyone was in the basement. When he went into the basement, there were wet footsteps on the floor because, like a lot of old houses, the basement had water standing here and there. It looked like someone had dragged their feet through the water and walked across the floor. However, no one had come in the tiny window in the basement and a person couldn't fit in that window anyway. There was no other way into the basement room.
That isn't all. One night, I was in the kitchen with my sister talking. All of a sudden there was a big boom in the living room, like someone had dropped a refrigerator in the middle of the floor. It was intense. We felt the vibration. When we checked it out, nothing was out of place in the living room. Don't even ask me what it was!
Another time, my sister arrived home from work to find all her kitchen chairs pulled out from the table and all the kitchen cabinets open. Of course, when she had left the house in the morning, the chairs and cabinets were in place. It didn't appear that anyone had broken into the house either. The door was locked when she arrived home and no windows or doors were tampered with. She was so scared, she waited on the porch steps for her husband to arrive home from work before she would go back in the house.
Lots of other things happened in this house, but I think this incident was the strangest thing of all: My sister was asleep and her husband came home pretty late one night. He had a few too many drinks, so he was sound asleep in no time. There were sliding wooden closet doors in their bedroom. My sister woke up and saw the outline of a dark figure on the doors with flames surrounding it. She tried to wake up her husband and she was in a panic. Finally, he woke up and he said it looked like the devil standing in the middle of flames. Needless to say, they moved out of this house as soon as their lease was up. Finally, the house was torn down so a department store could be built on the lot.
It was in the newspaper about the Indian burial ground and how the workers didn't want to disturb anything with their construction. Now rumor has it that the department store that was built on the site is very haunted as well. Employees in the store lose things then find it where they already looked. Automatic doors don't work and computers do weird things. Toys are out in the aisles in the morning when the store opens and one employee said she saw a little boy one morning but he couldn't be found. A person who came to fix the automatic doors said the whole system looked liked it had been rewired wrong and he had never seen anything like it. So I guess whatever was in the house is now in the department store!
