Spooky 9/11 Coincidences
by Paige S.

On the afternoon of September 10, 2001, I picked up my son (then age 10) from swim practice. He was unusually quiet and after a moment asked if he could talk to me about something that was bothering him - deeply and suddenly. He said, "Mom, I'm afraid that something terrible is going to happen."

I responded, "Well, like what exactly?" I had no idea where this conversation was coming from or where it was headed.

"I'm just afraid that something really bad is going to happen - like a war or a plague," he said.

Rather than tell him that he was being ridiculous, I reminded him that human history is indeed a living record of wars, disasters and plagues. I told him that the fact that he and I were alive to talk about this subject was testament to the fact that despite the cycle of trials that humans and nations go through constantly, we find ways to survive it.

I said, "Given humanity's previous track record, it is actually likely that you or your children may experience some devastation on a large scale - such as war, disaster or epidemic. But rather that live in fear for the future, we go forward with the determination to prevail and survive."

He was very quiet. He finally said, "I guess that's true. I'm just really afraid that something that will change the world is about to happen."

I said, "Don't worry, son. The world is changing all the time. We will be O.K."

That evening of Sept. 10, as my husband and I were preparing for bed, I asked him about some coupons I had been saving for "Free Miles on American Airlines" (from the back of Smart Start cereal boxes). We fly a lot. I said, "Hey, honey, can we use the coupons I've been saving for American Airlines?"

He said, "No. Actually, we never fly United or American."

I laid them on the alarm clock and said, "What time to you want to wake up tomorrow morning? How about seven-thirty?"

He said, "How about eight o'clock?"

I smiled and set the clock for seven forty-five a.m. CST. The alarm went off at 7:45 a.m. CST on September 11. The first plane hit about that same time (8:45 EST) on September 11. As I turned off the alarm, the coupons for American Airlines slid and scattered all over the floor. We just laid there in bed listening to the clock radio for a bit when the reports began to come onto NPR. Something about a plane hitting the WTC.

Thinking that it was erroneous reporting, I laughed and said, "It's probably American Airlines - they just crashed into our floor 10 minutes ago," pointing to the AA coupons scattered across our bedroom floor.

Of course, later that wasn't so funny.

Spooky coincidences - probably. Still chilling after all this time. I guess I wanted someone else to know.
