Cantankerous Poltergeist
by Cecilia A.

I decided on seeing my sister up in Northern California. I wasn't too crazy about the driving, but when I got there I was pleasantly surprised. The house I expected to find was no longer there as I remembered it. It was a fixer-upper. Then I remembered my sister telling me that her husband, Dan, was working on the house, that he even added a porch and an alcove. Well, I wasn't disappointed. I went into the kitchen and sat in the alcove. The table was lovely, the glass beveled and thick. The porch looked more like a patio. Then sis said that she needed to go to the market. She also said that she needed to tell me something. I said, "Sure, let's go."

As we were walking down the aisle, she asked me if I believed in ghosts. I said yes.

"How do you feel about them?"

"Never met one, why?'

"We have one living in the house."

After that she told me he wasn't a particularly friendly spirit, that the property was once rumored to have been part of a cemetery and that both of her closest friends had had encounters with the old man. Apparently, her girlfriend, Julia, actually saw the old geezer while showering. And so the day went on as usual. After a late dinner, Dan went to bed. My sister popped in a video. The house was dark and all of a sudden sis turns to me and says, "Did you hear that? It sounds like he's hitting the kitchen counter with a hammer!" I said something like, " Dan is probably trying to thaw out some ice or something." "C.C. he's sleeping in his bed." I wasn't scared, oh no - just a little numb.

Now, aside from not taking a shower for most of the trip, everything seemed back to normal. The day before I was supposed to leave, my sister and I decided to play cards. It was after supper, Dan was watching TV and their two dogs were taking naps under the kitchen table.

When sis had to go to the bathroom, I got up to get a glass of water and BAM! - I turned around to hear shrieking dogs dashing out the room and a beveled glass top flips over and cracks the interior of the alcove. At that moment my sister ran in and began yelling at her husband to come see, come see. I guess he was a skeptic. He told her not to get into a tizzy and that he would fix it. Well, she fixed it. She called our sister, Lisa and got all the herbs and holy water, wrote down the ritual and got rid of the cantankerous fool. As for Dan, he did alright too.
