The Cat Connection
by Mark A.

The first cat we had was a smoky gray-colored female that was brought into the family when I was still a baby and when it was a kitten. The connection between the cat and me was pretty strong from the beginning. My mom said when she'd try to hit me, the cat would stand in front of me hiss and try attacking my mom. That in itself was not so strange, and nothing of any significance happened until the day of the cat's death.

I was by this time nine years old and in grade school. From the time that I started school that day until the time I came home, all I could think about was the cat. I had such a strong desire to pet it and pick it up, to be with it and see it. Anything at all. I just remember it was as if something was pulling on me, tucking gently on the mind. I do not claim to say that this was paranormal. I will say this though: I have never in my entire life of 29 years again had that odd emotion or feeling. Needless to say, I got off the bus, ran all the way home, opened the door and said, "Where is the cat? I want to be with it." My mother's reply was that the cat was dead. My parents were both silent for a moment and then they explained that they accidentally killed it when they tried to back the car out of the driveway and did not realize it was underneath the car at the time.

One last note: as a young child I loved that cat, but never wanted to pick it up because I was afraid it would scratch the hell out of me.
