Ghosts
of the U.S.S. Lexington
by Hayley
A few months ago, I had the incredible opportunity of spending a few days upon the U.S.S. Lexington – an old aircraft carrier, and reputedly the home of several ghosts in good standing. I leapt at the chance to take the trip, but made a resolution not to go looking for ghosts. I knew that hopefulness would distort my imagination, and anyway I had a sense that I would feel the presence of any ghosts that would appear to me, rather than just want them to be there. I walked around where the ghosts had been seen by others, kept a clear head, and neither saw or felt anything – but something did happen later on.
Before I begin, a bit of naval history has to go into this story. It's essential. When the Lexington was in service, she was torpedoed during WWII. The ghosts were supposedly crewmen who had died during this attack. When I got to my quarters – a sardine-style bunk room, fairly well preserved as it would have been in the Navy days – I learned that I was to be sleeping in the exact same area in which the torpedo had connected.
I went to sleep at around midnight and fell asleep quickly. The sound of the waves on the hull was lulling. During the night I dreamed about hearing music; at one point I heard a certain song word for word, as it would have been in real life.
In the morning I related this story to many people who had slept in that bunk room, and to my surprise they too had dreamed of music. It made me wonder if someone else had played music, but that possibility was not valid because electronic equipment, even hand-held CD players, were not allowed on the ship. No one in our group could have played music, and there were no other groups staying on the Lex that night. I also talked to the security personal, and without mentioning the incident I learned that they were very strict and would not have let and music-playing go one, in the bunk rooms or anywhere else, because believe me, sound carried in that place!
So while I didn't see any ghosts, it did seem plausible that the ship was haunted in some way.
