Followed by a Drone

In 1981 when I was 17 years old, I used to work for an oil company located in the industrial area of North Portland, Oregon. I worked the graveyard shift and had to take the bus to work. The last bus dropped me off almost two miles from the job. I had to walk through a deserted area to reach the company. There were no lights and no people around.
For about a week, I would end up running to work because I had something following me. The truck drivers thought at first it was some sicko or bum, but then they started to see some weird things as they were coming and going. I remember hearing them over the dispatch radio, yelling that something had just paced their trucks or darted in front and then in back, like it was flying or swooping from one end of the truck to the other. It got to be so bad for me that I actually paid a guy who worked at the junkyard up the way to walk with me from the bus.
After three nights of not seeing anything, IT showed up again. As we were walking, my friend grabbed my arm and told me not to look, but over to my side about 15 feet away something was following us. I tried to look out of the corner of my eye and could just make out a darker shadow. We walked a little faster to work that night.
Dave (my companion) stayed at work with me that night; he didn't want to walk out there alone. The next day, he borrowed a car and we drove to my job. We were going about 45 mph when all of a sudden this thing was beside the car. I can only describe it as a look-alike for the drone in one of the Star Wars movies - the one where Luke is on the ice planet about to get eaten by a snowman-thing. The drone crashes into the snow bank, and unfolds and starts to float. This movie came out after this happened to me, in 1979.
This thing paced the car and we sped up to 65. It stayed with us until we were at the edge of the parking lot. We were both shouting as we got out of the car and ran into the office. The guy I was relieving looked at me and said, "Yeah, I saw it. Didn't you?" He said he had seen it before and if we left it alone, it would leave us alone. I have no idea what it was. I worked there for 1-1/2 years, and saw it continuously. Sometimes it would make a beeping noise when it followed, but mostly it was just silent and creepy. I was glad when I quit, so I didn't have to deal with it anymore. I still would like to know what it was.
