Ghost Wanted to Play
by Peggy Tyree
In 1991, shortly before my husband and I were married, my husband was renting a house on Scott Street in Lorton, VA. The house was new, but had been built on an old lot where another smaller home had once stood. We each have daughters from previous marriages, Amanda and Elizabeth, and they were both around five years old at that time. My daughter and I would often spend the weekends there. The girls had their own room next door to where my husband and I slept.
My daughter was always a good sleeper at home. She rarely awoke during the night, but whenever we stayed there she always woke up in the middle of the night and would crawl into bed with me. One particular night, I woke up to the familiar feeling of a child standing beside the bed staring at me. I assumed it was my daughter, and bleary eyed I pulled back the covers so she could crawl in beside me. To my astonishment, she was already in the bed next to me asleep.
I looked up and saw the figure of a little girl. She was mostly transparent, sort of a filmy white. She appeared to be looking down at my daughter. My mouth dropped open as I could not believe my own eyes. The little girl seemed to lift her eyes from my daughter and look at me. I swear a look of astonishment crossed her face when she realized I could see her. She quickly turned and floated out of the room through the open door only to disappear at the top of the staircase. I simply could not believe what I had just witnessed. I pinched myself several times because I thought I must be dreaming even though I knew I was awake. I was definitely wide awake.
I have no doubt that a little girl must have died on that property at some time in the past, but I have never looked into the matter. I think she just wanted someone to play with.
