Goodbye, Mae
by Emma
I work for my father in his small company, which consist of me, Tony and my farther. In November, 2005, my farther had gone on holiday, which left me and Tony to run the business. On the 21st of November, Tony phoned and advised that he wasn't going to make it in work that day as he wasn't feeling too well. The building in which we worked was a large, newish building with a few other companies that had rented rooms for their business. It was a warm and friendly building, so I didn't mind being in the office by myself.
At around 5.30 p.m., the receptionist advised that she was going home and could I lock up as I was the last in the building. I couldn't believe it was that time already, but I had been really busy all day and jokingly answered, "Of course I will…. Doesn't time flyby when you're having fun." We said our goodbyes and I started to tidy up as usual. Every night before I went home I washed my cup and empted the bins.
I headed for the kitchen when I was startled by an old man. I'd say he was in his early 50s. He was coming out of the men's toilets when he startled me. I screamed out, "OH MY GOD!" and dropped my cup on the floor. I apologized with a bit of a laugh and told him I'd been told by the receptionist I was the last person in the building. He didn't really reply to what I said; in fact, I didn't understand what he meant at all, but as I was in a rush I just dismissed it thinking he had mistaken my name. He said, "Mae Huntington!" with a smile.
I walked passed him saying, "Have you got keys, sir, as I'll be going home soon?" As I turned around to hear the reply, he wasn't there! I looked around and thought he had gone back to his office or something… so I went to the kitchen and washed my cup. After this I looked around the building and knocked on the 12 of the office rooms, but I had no answer and the doors were all locked! I went back to my office thinking the man had gone home. I packed my things up and headed home. I locked up the building and thought no more of it.
The next day at work when I was making my morning coffee, I saw Sheeler the receptionist. In passing conversation I told her that some guy nearly gave me a heart attack last night… as she was wrong about me being the last person left in building; in fact, there was another gentleman. Sheeler told me that I must be going mad. Every night she checks all the office doors to see if they're locked. Last night all the offices were locked up except for mine. I was adamant she must have made as mistake, but she insisted she hadn't.
Later that day, Sheeler came to my office looking quite pale and shocked. I asked her if she was ok. She told me that after we had spoken that morning she had told the caretaker about what I had said and how certain she was that there was no one in the building. He told her that about three years ago, a man named Derrick Huntington had a stroke and died in the men's toilets and he found him there. The man's last words were: "Goodbye, Mae."
Sheeler and I asked around the building if anyone had spoken to me last night or was late going out of the building. Everybody had left between 4.30 and 5 p.m. I was looking for some logical explanation, but there wasn't. I believe that Mr. Huntington had wanted me to tell his wife goodbye for him, as he wasn't able to, and that's what I did. I found out were she lived and told her what had happened. She was overwhelmed and so thankful. She showed me a picture of her husband... and it was the man I had seen and spoken to.
Since the incident, I have never seen nor herd anything else. Maybe that was his unfinished business, and now he has been able to pass on and be at peace. Everything I have told you is true… unexplainable, I know, and its taken me sometime to understand and comprehend what happened. I have never believed in the supernatural nor ghosts or anything of that sort. But now I am sure as the sky is blue that there is something else out there.
