Static Man
by David Luz
I crossed over where I shouldn't have! This is the true story of the white man I saw when I was a kid. This happened when we lived on a ranch in Salinas. I was around 10 years old and the house we lived in was small. I had to sleep on the same bed with my two brothers. It was summertime.
One night I was lying there awake looking at the ceiling and thinking of all kinds of things when I heard this humming sound coming from nowhere. It started to get louder. The sound was like that of those electrical towers. I turned my head and looked toward the door where I saw this white figure like a man, bent over with his hands on his knees looking at me! He didn't have a face, but I could tell it was looking at me. He was like an outline filled in with the color white -- a white that looked like the static you get on TV.
I watched this intruder for about ten minutes when suddenly the humming stopped, followed by the sound of a ricochet! As I looked, the white man started to move, bend, and distort like from heat waves. I was amazed, but not scared. For some reason, I wasn't afraid because I got out of bed, and with my arm outstretched in the dark started walking slowly toward the stranger. The next thing I know, I was at the door. I turned around and the white man was next to the bed in that same hunched-over posture. As I started feeling for the light switch, the white figure's heat waves came back, making it dance and shimmy. When I turned the lights on, I saw a person in the space where the white man should have been, then nothing. This person was looking right at me, smiling. The face looked familiar.
As the years went by, I began realizing that person looked like me as a grownup! It's strange because I've had dreams about my childhood: I'm running down the hallway of the school I attended as a boy. I'm back in the houses we lived in. There was one dream I remember, where I open a door to a dark room where there's some people lying on a bed!
