Seeing
the Future
by Vicki R.
I was at camp at the age of 10 and vividly remember telling my counselors that I would live in the same little rental home that my parents did years ago. I could see myself sweeping the front stoop. Sure enough, eight years later I was living there. One day, as I was sweeping the front stoop, my memory of telling the camp counselors came to me. Years later and four children later, I knew in my heart that I would have twins. My husband had had a vasectomy and I wasn't sleeping around. We had been married 20 years and the feeling of twins was getting stronger. I knew that I would carry them and they would be healthy. I told my mother several times and she dismissed it. I once I asked my husband if he would raise children that were not his and he said no. Through events working very quickly, I was divorced and re-married in a short period of time and the re-marriage was only because I was three months pregnant with twins. The marriage was very short and the man was abusive. But my boys are healthy and just a big joy in my life.
My father passed away in January, 1998. He has been contacting our family since his death. Can't fix a vacuum, dad will give advice. Can't find an important paper, he will find it. We are so used to asking dad for help and receiving the help, that nothing surprises us. My mother sat at my dad's desk and began to read all the notes he wrote on life. Some are dirty jokes, others are inspirational sayings and others are just dictionary look-ups. She found one note that she never saw before, written in his handwriting but not as clear as the others. It says that "it's like walking from one room to another. Great adventure. It's not the end, but the beginning. Death." As my mother told me about this, she was missing my dad a lot that day and feeling very sad. Where did the paper come from? Of course, it was a sign of comfort for my mom from my dad.
