Wars and
Visions of Wars
by James K.
When I was in Vietnam as a soldier in the infantry, I had several occurrences that saved my life. One such occurrence was a time in the field when we had been on a hilltop several days, and for some reason one day I decided to move my squad (I was a platoon sergeant) to another hilltop nearby. Within five minutes of moving from that hilltop, a mortar barrage hit the very spot on the hill were we had been. Had we not moved it would have been bad for us. Another time we were in a company briefing for the next mission. When I saw the map (it was an area we had not been to before, so I knew nothing about the area) and heard the name that was being given to the hill we were to go to, I suddenly saw a disaster was coming and a chill overcame me like I had not experienced before, and I knew that to go meant death for me and many others for no gain. What also was unusual was a way to avoid this mission became available to me and I took it. I suppose that made me a coward, I don't know. Anyway, the officer who took my place was killed on the first day of that operation and over the next few weeks many died including the battalion commander. Many helicopters were shot down and one carrying a load of fuel was shot down and crashed onto the ammo stocks and just about blew the entire firebase off of the top of the hill. After my military service, I had a dream that I feel was not a dream but someone who was trying to communicate to someone. It was as if I could see through his eyes. He was involved in an uprising or disturbance in a large city, possibly in South America. The crowd began to run from the troops and crossed a large highway bridge and then he was running to a wooden shack. He was about to reach the door when the dream stopped. I am certain he was killed at his doorstep.
