House of Weird Activity
by Christina F.

I have always been interested in the unknown - ESP, ghosts, etc. - especially after waking in the middle of the night once when I was a teenager and having seen a translucent woman at the end of my bed just staring at me. Thinking I was dreaming, I closed my eyes and reopened them only to still see her there. She wasn't mean or sinister, just watchful. Another time, I awoke at 1:22 a.m. and sat straight up in bed. I didn't know why I did that, so I laid down and fell back to sleep. About 4:00 a.m. I was awakened by voices in the kitchen; they were the voices of my parents. I walked out there and asked them why they were up so early and they told me that my grandmother had just passed away. I asked them what time and the told me a little after 1:00 a.m. I now believe the reason I woke up was my grandmother coming to visit me just after or just before she passed away.

Which now brings me to this story. I have lived in a home now with my husband for about nine years. We have two daughters. It was built in 1956 and purchased by my husband almost 15 years ago. I'm not sure if it is the house or a presence in the house but many things have happened here, which at first made me very wary, but these occurrences have happened for such a long period of time that I am starting to get used to them. Everything that I am about to tell you has occurred over the course of nine years.

I will start with the time that my husband was away on a trip. Our first daughter had only been born a few months before. It was early in the evening, she was asleep in her crib and I was sitting in the living room watching television when I heard water coming from the laundry room. I walked across the house to the laundry room to find the water in the wash basin turned on. Normally, I wouldn't think this was weird, but I hadn't used the sink. Another time, it was around noon, I was on the computer, the house was quiet, I heard the front door open, footsteps in the house and then the sound of keys hitting the counter. Thinking my husband was home, I yelled out "Hello." After about the third time of not getting an answer and being very perturbed at him ignoring me, I walked downstairs to have a talk with him. My husband was not home and the front door was locked. There were no keys on the counter and nobody was in the house except for me.

There are some afternoons that I like to take a nap before I pick up our daughters from school. One afternoon, I lay down, set the alarm so that I would be sure to wake up so as not to be late in picking up my girls. I had no sooner started to drift off than my alarm clock started going off. I looked at the clock and it wasn't anywhere near the time that I had set the alarm for. I checked the alarm setting and, sure enough, it was set for the time I thought I had set it for, which was not anywhere near the time it had gone off. Another time, when I had laid down for a nap in the afternoon, again, I was just drifting off when the television turned on by itself. At first, I thought I was laying on the remote control, but after searching for it saw that nothing was touching it and it wasn't anywhere near me.

On another occasion, I was getting my daughters ready to go out for dinner when all of the sudden their Barbie jeep remote control car went zooming across the floor of their room. I yelled at my daughters to stop playing around because I was trying to get them ready and both of them told me that they didn't do it. So, after many years of things happening in our home, I decided to believe my daughters and I walked over to the jeep and discovered it was turned off. Not only was it turned off but the remote control was in a crate with nothing touching it. My daughters asked me why it did what it did and I just laughed and said, "Wasn't that funny." Then quickly changed the subject.

One morning, one of my daughters yelled to me that the television in the playroom was being funny. After wiping the sleep from my eyes, I walked down there to find the television changing channels all by itself. The cable box wasn't on and the remote control was sitting in it's usual spot in the entertainment center. Again, I laughed and told her it indeed was a funny TV. There are other times, when I tell my children to turn the TV off because it's supper time or they've had too much of it and they won't, so I walk over and turn it off only to have it turn itself right back on. The kids, of course, think it's hilarious.

Just the other night, my husband and I had an argument. I was still upset about it a while later and putting away some wash in my daughters' room when a carousel that sits on a dresser in their room started up all by itself and continued to move and play music for a few minutes. It brought a smile to my face. I felt like whatever or whoever is here was trying to cheer me up. The next morning I was doing dishes, the kids were in school, my husband was at work, when I heard footsteps and someone bumping into something upstairs. It was so convincing that I walked over to the bottom of the stairs and yelled, "Who's there?" Not getting an answer and seeing that the front door was locked, I went back to doing the dishes when it happened again. This time, after hearing the sound wanting to know I wasn't going crazy, I looked at my cat who had been lying on the counter previously, to see him sitting up erect, ears perked, looking at the direction from where the sound came from.

Last night, my husband and I were watching a television show called "Secret Passages" on the History Channel. All of a sudden, my husband blurts out that he's heard some weird sounds in our home like someone is here when there's not anyone around. I looked at him astonished and said, "After all these years, all this time, I thought I was the only one." He told me that he's heard the footsteps ever since he bought the house. When I asked him if anything else happened while he lived alone here, he told me that things would sometimes mysteriously move from where he placed them. He never thought anything of it. I'm not sure what to think of everything that happens here in our home. I guess sometimes I think it all gives it personality.
