I feel the need to tell someone since I cannot find a logical explanation to what occurred Friday in my office. I was having a work-related conversation with one of my staff members by my desk. My assistant had just returned from lunch and as not to interrupt my conversation, placed his empty bowl (actually the bowl is of rectangular shape), on top of a box of supplies not too far from me and walked back to the production floor. A few moments later, we heard what sounded like something falling or tapping on plastic. The sound was not loud, but easily heard in the quietness of the office. There was absolutely nothing else in the vicinity that could have made the noise we heard. Just out of curiosity I picked up the bowl, and to my astonishment I saw that all four of the fork's teeth were broken evenly inside the bowl. As I turned the bowl over to see inside, I recognized the sound we heard was the teeth of the fork touching the inside of the lid in the bowl.
We became spooked by the realization that when the teeth broke off the fork, they broke off at the same time sounding as if only one had tapped in the inside of the bowl. In case the fork was already broken and was just settling inside the bowl, I called my assistant and asked him if the fork was broken when he left the bowl in the office. His answer was no. It took me sometime to convince him that we were not setting him up for a bad joke. I had to remind him that this is not something I have ever done or will ever do. I do not joke in the work place. We thought perhaps that food gases in the bowl were responsible, but #1 - he just finished eating, it was fish; #2 - the room was not hot; and #3 - plastic forks do not break that easily. Later on, I became more curious when I recalled that on the previous day, the same staff member that I was conversing with, as she walked in my office, she seemed to trip on something that was not there and the heel of her shoe broke. The strange thing about that is that the heel broke off in the middle. It did not become separated from the shoe as one would expect.
