Flashes
by Lindsay W.
My house is somewhere around 75 years old, and was built by my great grandparents. It was then bought by my parents after my great grandmother had died, and they have been living in it for the past 23 years. I'm 19 years old, and my whole life I've known that this place is haunted. As a young child, probably when I was three or four, I'd awake in the middle of the night to find my bedroom light on, or to the unexplained sound of someone brushing their teeth. Over the years, so many strange things have happened that it's hard to keep track of them. We've heard loud crashes, as if glass were breaking, only to find nothing broken. My brother has heard knockings on his bedroom walls, that start in one corner and go all the way around the perimeter of the room. My mother has felt someone brush up against her. My father has seen people out of the corner of his eye. I've awoken in the night to find myself terrified, covered in sweat, with an extremely foul, rotten odor in the air that seems to disappear as quickly as it appeared. I've heard, on several occasions, a loud, almost animalistic howl that sounds like someone in extreme pain, and my brother has even experienced this with me.
So when strange things started to happen a few weeks ago, no one in our house was surprised. It was between Christmas and New Years, and began one evening when my father and I were gone out to get supper. My mother was home alone with our dog, and he started barking for no reason and ran out into our porch. My mother assumed that my father and I were pulling up the driveway, that my dog had heard us, and as a result started barking. So when a few moments later she heard somebody tell the dog to shut up and be good, she figured that it was my father. When she went out into the porch to greet us, she found that we weren't yet home, that there was nobody there. That was only the first strange thing to happen that night.
Several hours later, I was watching TV with my mother in our family room, and my father was working in his office which is just off the TV room. Suddenly, both my mother and I saw a bright, white flash come from within my father's office, and assumed it was just his digital camera going off. But when a few moments later my father asked us if we'd seen that flash too and if we knew what it was, we realized it wasn't the camera at all.
About 10 minutes later, both my parents were in the office when they saw the flash again. It was a bright white flash that lit up the whole room and seemed to come from above them. It didn't make a sound, and there were no marks on the ceiling. The digital camera wasn't even turned on, so it couldn't have been that, and besides the camera was on the desk, not above their heads which was the source of the light.
Maybe two or three hours after the bizarre flashing light incident, my mother was heading into the back of the basement where our laundry room is located. She went to push the door open, and found that it wouldn't budge. So she pushed harder and it gave way a bit. So she kept pushing and pushing until it finally opened, only to find that my father's table saw had been pushed in front of the door. My father had been in the back of the basement only minutes earlier, and there's no way that he could have closed that door behind him if the saw had been in the way, nor could he have pushed the saw in front of the door then closed it behind him.
These occurrences are the most that have happened in a long time, and I'm not quite sure whether our ghosts are just trying to say hello or maybe they're trying to warn us about something. But the flashes of white light have got to be the weirdest thing that have happened in this house in a long time. These are only a handful of the strange things that have occurred in my house over my short almost 20 years, but they are among the most memorable experiences for sure.
