Faceless Stranger
by Sara
In the spring of 2002, I was attending college in Muncie, Indiana. Like a typical college student, I had put off sending my rent check to my landlord. My friend, Sarah, and I were heading off for spring break in the morning. So around midnight she decided to drive me to my landlord's house so I could leave my rent payment at his door.
As we were driving out of his neighborhood, I saw an elderly man standing in the middle of the road. I told Sarah to look out for him. His appearance was strange. He was wearing a brown, plaid, tweed suit with a matching hat. His clothes were outdated, but his head was what really caught my attention. His back was to us, and I couldn't believe how white his head looked. It is hard to explain; it was almost opaque and somewhat transparent-looking. I was amazed by its smooth, bright white appearance.
As we neared him, he slowly walked to the edge of the street and stopped between two houses in front of the curb. I turned to look at him as we drove past and was shocked to see a man with no face! The same smooth, white, textureless "skin" covered his face, leaving no features. Shocked, I quickly turned around and blurted out, "Sarah, that man has no face!" My friend replied, "I know." She had seen the same thing, and as we sped away she said she saw him walk back into the middle of the street from her rear view mirror.
I have always believed in ghosts, and this incident only strengthened my belief, but I always found it odd that the man had no features. Then, last year I was helping one of my sixth grade students understand a story she was reading. As I read over her shoulder, chills ran over my body. The story told of a ghost that appears in a waterfront community to warn of approaching dangers, and this ghost too has a white, featureless face.
